Takuma Sato wins his second Indianapolis 500 at empty track

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — At an eerily empty Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Takuma Sato snatched a second Indianapolis 500 victory in an odd and unsatisfying finish to “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” Sato held off Scott Dixon and won under caution after teammate Spencer Pigot crashed with five laps remaining in Sunday’s race, held in front of empty grandstands for the first time in 104 runnings because of the pandemic. Pigot needed medical attention on the track, the crash scene was a massive debris...

Horse racing: Mo Forza, jockey Flavien Prat wins Del Mar Mile

Perhaps announcer Larry Collmus best summed up Mo Forza’s performance in Sunday’s $200,000 Grade II Del Mar Mile as the field raced toward the finish. When jockey Flavien Prat found an opening early in the stretch and shot through along the rail, that’s when Collmus went to work. “Mo Forza dives through an opening on the inside. It is Mo Forza. Mo Forza comes up the rail and he’s pulling away … Wow! He won it by six emphatic lengths.” Wow, indeed. Mo Forza, the 6-5 favorite, officially won by 4 ...

Rams’ Sean McVay is no fan of SoFi Stadium’s artificial crowd noise

Rams coach Sean McVay loves the look of SoFi Stadium. As for the sound of the team’s new home, don’t get him started. Actually, you don’t have to. “I don’t know about you guys, but how irritating was that constant crowd noise that just never stopped?” McVay said before reporters even brought it up in a Zoom chat Sunday, the day after the Rams held an intrasquad scrimmage at the Inglewood stadium. McVay wasn’t talking about a real crowd’s cheers and boos, of course, because no fans were allowed i...

Nearly seven months after his death, Lakers keep the memory of Kobe Bryant close to heart

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — On the court, the Black Mamba was Kobe Bryant’s icy persona. He was less himself and more a character: a cold-blooded scorer who would not hesitate to strike. Adopting snake scales as his skin was his way of hiding any sense of doubt — his way of showing an uncompromised resolve to compete. The Lakers hope to feel something like that Monday night for Game 4 against the Trail Blazers, when they don their Black Mamba City Edition jerseys (brought back from the 2017-18 seas...

Stop enabling California’s taxation addicts

One of the great delusions in California is the idea that if only the government had more power and money, we might finally solve the problems faced by Californians. Even before the pandemic, Californians were faced with an onslaught of calls for additional taxes. Just last year, the California Legislature proposed over $20 billion in tax and fee increases, according to the California Taxpayers Association. Just this past March, Californians were presented with 236 local tax and bond measures, p...

Welcome back to academic brainwashing season: Walter Williams

Parents, legislators, taxpayers and others footing the bill for college education might be interested in just what is in store for the upcoming academic year. Since many college classes will be online, there is a chance to witness professors indoctrinating their students in real-time. So, there’s a chance that some college faculty might change their behavior. The leftist bias at our colleges and universities has many harmful effects. A UC Davis mathematics professor faced considerable backlash o...

Canha’s Sacrifice Fly Lifts A’s Past Angels In 10

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Mark Canha hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 on Sunday. Matt Olson made the last out of the ninth, but Franklin Barreto came in to run for him at the start of the 10th. After Matt Chapman singled Barreto to third, the Angels brought the infield in before Canha hit a high fly to center off Ty Buttrey (1-1). Mike Trout made the catch but Barreto scored without a throw. Canha finished with two RBIs. Chapman added...

Saturday 22 August: Dunbar

A great match, halved, at Dunbar Links, with a setting sun to toast to was a fitting way to wrap up our Scottish golfing exploits for the strange year of 2020. With this round at Dunbar we’d completed play in our East Lothian swing that spanned nearly two weeks and six separate links. The “Golf Coast” was the last piece in our puzzle of playing all the major regions of Scottish Links. In 2016 we spent a full week in… Continue Reading →

Brittney Sykes, Candace Parker lead Sparks to comeback win over Wings

The Sparks got some good injury news on Saturday when it was revealed that guard Riquna Williams had merely sprained her left knee. There’s no timetable for her return, but given how severe the injury looked, the news that the veteran’s season wasn’t over was a relief to the team. But Sunday’s 84-81 win over the Dallas Wings showed that Williams’ absence puts the Sparks’ depth to the test. First, for how the Sparks (10-3) won: They found themselves down by 10 early in the fourth quarter. But L.A...
