Lakers prep for James Harden, a unique threat on a unique Rockets team

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The first morning a then-brand new Lakers coaching staff assembled in the same room last summer in a Beverley Hills hotel, they needed a way to feel each other’s basketball philosophies — a common talking point to start understanding how they each saw the game. Frank Vogel’s ice-breaker with his newly hired assistants was to look at the league’s leading scorers and how to defend them: Steph Curry, Damian Lillard, Trae Young. The conversation shifted to Houston’s James Ha...

Zipper manufacturer closes temporarily after COVID-19 testing costs skyrocket

California’s decision to shift more COVID-19 testing costs onto private health insurance companies has wreaked havoc on Talon International, a Woodland Hills-based zipper manufacturer. Talon, which also produces custom labels and patches, had been contracting with Kyla, a San Jose company, to provide weekly testing to its 28 workers for $9.99 per employee per month via its software. But since UnitedHealthCare, Talon’s insurance company, is no longer obligated to pay for routine testing, Kyla’s m...

Mike Trout admits to ‘frustrating’ Angels season

The Angels came into 2020 with reasons for optimism. A new manager, high-profile off-season acquisitions and an expanded postseason gave them a reason to believe they would be playing meaningful October baseball. Instead, the Angels entered Thursday’s game against the San Diego Padres with a record of 12-25, tied with the Boston Red Sox for the worst in the American League. Center fielder Mike Trout repeatedly described the 2020 season as a frustrating one in his pregame availability on Thursday...
