Lakers crush Rockets to advance to the Western Conference Finals

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — As early as the first quarter, LeBron James emanated a meanness that he seems to hold in reserve for these moments. Closeout games, he’s said, are the hardest games to win. But as he hit one of his three 3-pointers Saturday evening to give his team a then-16 point lead just six minutes in, he sneered as he stalked back to the bench. There would be no comeback Saturday night. Not against the Lakers, who not only outplayed Houston in a 119-96 win in Game 5 to advance to th...

Lakers bigs don’t play much but stay supportive from bench

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — He wasn’t introduced in the starting lineup on Saturday night, but for every Lakers starter, JaVale McGee was waiting. He stood at the end of the team line, greeting each of them with individualized handshakes. When he sat on the bench, he and Dwight Howard were the loudest voices crying out and waiving their arms with adolescent energy. When rookie Talen Horton-Tucker scored in the first half, both of the Lakers’ centers sprung up in celebration. Even though neither of ...

Boulders placed in LA neighborhood’s freeway corridor fuel feud over plight of homeless

Dozens of boulders that sat for five days on the sidewalks along a freeway underpass — intended to discourage homeless people from living there — had been hauled away as last week drew to a close. But the tensions the rocks triggered endured, intensifying a squabble over the plight of the unhoused in a diverse Los Angeles neighborhood. That’s right: Boulders. Big ones. Dozens of them, some weighing hundreds of pounds each. After the rocks arrived early last week, they were decried by some as “ho...

Blue-collar rods and guns

Stevens 311 from the 1970s reborn   Copyright 2020 Erik Helm   A concept of value…   At a gun show last year I lingered at a table where a vendor had on display and for sale a large collection of vintage hunting rifles and shotguns, and also a nice selection of old split bamboo fly rods. As I fingered the rods and a shotgun or two, mentally putting a monetary value to each item often much below the asking price, I found myself in a familiar quandary; what is value? Is it only m...

Chargers get to welcome Bengals rookie QB Joe Burrow to the NFL

Bosa doesn’t like being disturbed when he enters his game-day zone. He won’t have to deal with stadium traffic, screaming fans and friends asking for help at the ticket window. The star pass rusher will get to walk onto the field in a relaxed state before starting his detailed stretches. Bosa being undisturbed before kickoff might be bad news for...

Dodgers get ‘best-case scenario’ results on Dustin May’s foot injury

LOS ANGELES — Dustin May has not done a good job of dodging baseballs at Chase Field. But he has apparently done a good job of avoiding damage. A CT scan on May’s left foot Friday revealed no fracture and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called it the “best-case scenario” with the young right-hander suffering only a contusion when he was hit by a one-hop comebacker during his start Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. A year ago in another game at Chase Field, May was hit in the head by a line...

Clippers aim to burst Nuggets’ bubble again in Game 6

The Clippers offered Denver an opportunity to escape the bubble Friday night, but Doc Rivers’ squad didn’t exactly insist on it – and the Nuggets proved again to be guests unwilling to take a hint, rallying from a 16-point deficit to force Game 6 early Sunday. After the Clippers coughed up their first Western Conference semifinal series’ closeout opportunity in a 111-105 loss, both teams went to the video to try to figure out what happened and why. Mike Mayers credits his Angels breakout to social media

Angels reliever Mike Mayers discovered what may have been the turning point of his career, of all places, on Instagram. Last winter, amid the coverage of Roy Halladay’s candidacy and eventual election to the Hall of Fame, Mayers found the story of how Mariano Rivera showed Halladay the grip for his cutter. The baseball they used, which is now a part of Halladay’s exhibit at the Hall of Fame, was traced with the hand position Rivera used. Mayers saw a photo on Instagam and tried to put his hand o...

LAFC hosts Portland looking to stop shutout skid

The first phase of the Major League Soccer restart hasn’t gone as smoothly as Los Angeles Football Club would have liked, but Sunday night is another chance to turn things around. LAFC has lost four of its past five games heading into this game against Portland (8 p.m., KRCA). In the past two, LAFC has been held scoreless, while allowing six goals – not the way Bob Bradley or anyone associated with LAFC would have envisioned things going. “Portland is always a tough opponent,” Bradley said. “Eve...

Naomi Osaka rallies at US Open to win 3rd Grand Slam

NEW YORK — After one errant forehand in the first set of the U.S. Open final, Naomi Osaka looked at her coach in the mostly empty Arthur Ashe Stadium stands with palms up, as if to say, “What the heck is happening?” In response to another wayward forehand against Victoria Azarenka seconds later, Osaka chucked her racket. It spun a bit and rattled against the court. Surprisingly off-kilter in the early going Saturday, Osaka kept missing shots and digging herself a deficit. Until, suddenly, she li...
