Angels file motion to dismiss defamation suit by former clubhouse worker

The Angels have asked an Orange County judge to throw out part of a lawsuit filed against the club and Major League Baseball by a former clubhouse employee. The case is scheduled for a Jan. 21 hearing. The Angels fired Bubba Harkins in March because he provided substances that pitchers applied to baseballs illegally, and in August Harkins filed a suit against the club and MLB for defamation. Harkins claimed he was a scapegoat in baseball’s crackdown on the use of foreign substances. Lawyers reta...

Hoornstra: How COVID-19 chaos might help Dodgers repeat as champions

You don’t have to look at the Dodgers’ roster to predict another championship for them in 2021. All you have to do is look at the odds. Not since the New York Yankees’ 1998-2000 three-peat has a champion defended its World Series victory. In a 30-team league with no hard salary cap, that’s not what you would expect. We should have had another back-to-back champion by now. That’s been especially true over the last five years, when a handful of “superteams” emerged in the San Francisco Giants’ wak...

Peaceful post-election protests held in Long Beach, Los Angeles

A smattering of peaceful election-related rallies were held across Los Angeles County on Wednesday, Nov. 4, as the result of the presidential election the day prior remained unclear. The protests marked a shift from the night before, when Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested about 40 people and cited about 30 others protesting near Staples Center and at downtown intersections after declaring several unlawful assemblies in the area. About 70 people gathered in front of Long Beach C...

Familiar face set to return to L.A. City Council, while sitting councilman could fall to challenger

A county supervisor is expected to return to the Los Angeles City Council, while a sitting council member may be denied a second term by a challenger, if results remain consistent after county registrar’s complete ballot counting for the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3. In what could be a departure from the norm, 4th District Councilman David Ryu is looking at serving only a single term if urban planner Nithya Raman stays in the lead after all ballot counting is settled. As of results update...

Recipe: Lauren Ko’s cranberry curd-filled ‘Happy as a Gram’ pie

Add color and cheer to your pandemic holiday table with pie artist Lauren Ko’s geometrically-designed pies. This one, from Ko’s new cookbook, “Pieometry: Modern Tart Art and Pie Design for the Eye and the Palate” (William Morrow; $32.50), is inspired by the tangram, a Chinese dissection puzzle made up of geometric shapes arranged in varying combinations to form other shapes. While this particular pie gets its bright pop from tropical fruits reminiscent of summer, its warm, speculoos crust and ta...

Social justice on ballot scores some victories, suffers some defeats

Why should suspects with money be able to leave jail while the gears of justice grind, while those without money are stuck behind bars? Should skin color, sex and ethnicity be factors in public college admissions, and who gets public jobs and contracts? Why should criminals who’ve been given probation instead of jail time be allowed to vote, while parolees – who did prison time and are finishing their sentences on the outside – are forbidden from voting? California voters wrestled with ballots c...

Los Angeles remains in purple, or widespread, coronavirus tier

Los Angeles County remains mired in the most restrictive tier of the state’s coronavirus reopening plan thanks to an uptick in cases, with the county on Wednesday, Nov. 4, reporting the highest daily number of new COVID-19 infections in more than two months. The county reported 1,843 new cases of COVID-19 and 22 additional deaths Wednesday. Instagram pie art: Tips, tricks and Thanksgiving recipes from social media’s best pie artists

On a recent trip to Brooklyn, pie artist and Instagram sensation Helen Nugent spotted something inspiring. It wasn’t a whimsically-shaped cronut or trendy new pizza she saw in a restaurant window, but the mesmerizing designs of the sidewalk sewer grates. “They had this beautiful Art Deco quality to them and I thought, ‘That would make a great pie,’” says Nugent, founder of Pie-Eyed Girl and the popular Instagram @batterednbaked. “Inspiration can come from almost anywhere.” Gardens. Forests. Mosa...

L.A. County’s Vote Center system held up nicely this Election Day — a lot different than March

In what may now seem like eons ago, Los Angeles County’s chief election official Dean Logan stood in front of cameras after a day of voting center meltdowns. The March 3 primary election was the inaugural mass rollout of the county’s $300 million vote center network — a highly touted system that was supposed to make voting across the county easier and faster. But after a day of technical glitches, poll worker issues, communications problems, it only made voters angrier. Long lines and waits plag...

How L.A. County’s Measure J was winning: Voters wanted to meet the moment, officials say

For years, Los Angeles County criminal justice reform advocates have called for “alternatives to incarceration” as a way of breaking cycles of violence, recidivism and racial disparity that fills the county’s massive jail system. But it hasn’t been easy. They’ve faced opposing law enforcement interests, and a public sentiment that has very much supported them, and still does. It still faces the prospect of legal challenges and a sheriff who says Measure J’s slogan “Re-Imagine L.A.” is really abo...

Alexander: Zane Smith goes after NASCAR Truck Series title

It probably was a given that someday Zane Smith would be racing for a living. At 3, he was on a BMX bike, the little kid from Huntington Beach zipping around the Orange Y BMX track (which closed in 2016) or Bellflower BMX. At 5, he was racing go-karts, at the track in the parking lot of Fontana’s Auto Club Speedway or at Adams Kart Track in what is now Jurupa Valley. He won championships five consecutive years before graduating to Legends Car racing, running 5/8-scale replicas of classic cars fr...

Kaiser Permanente commits $1.5 million to help nonprofits curb COVID-19 among homeless

Kaiser Permanente has awarded $1.5 million in grants to 11 Southern California nonprofits to help curb the spread of COVID-19 among the region’s expanding homeless population. The money targets people who access homeless shelters and have an increased risk of developing and transmitting the virus because of their living conditions. Homeless shelters and other supportive-service locations are often faced with limited staffing and resources, and outbreaks can further strain their operations. Kaise...

Chargers’ latest O-line combination does well in Bryan Bulaga’s return

COSTA MESA — Chargers coach Anthony Lynn has used a next-man approach for his oft-shuffled offensive line this season. But Lynn decided to skip a few men last week against the Denver Broncos, with the hope of seeing better results. “Hell, right now we’ve had so many people rotating on the offensive line, I just wanted to see what I have,” Lynn said Monday. Lynn had Cole Toner, a Chargers practice squad player who hadn’t played in a game the past two seasons. Toner was viewed as a worst-case scen...
