Democrat Josh Newman declares victory over Republican Ling Ling Chang in 29th Senate District rematch

Democrat Josh Newman has declared victory in his 29th Senate District rematch with GOP State Sen. Ling Ling Chang, flipping the seat back to blue and further shrinking Republicans’ presence in the California legislature. “I’m immensely grateful, as well as humbled, that the voters of my district have once again granted me the honor and privilege of representing them in the California State Senate,” Newman said Thursday night. The win is vindication for Newman. He won the SD-29 seat over Ch...

Nevada teen Arabella Sims upsets national team swimmer Erica Sullivan on first day of U.S. Open

IRVINE — In the early days of the pandemic, Olympic swimmer Jordan Wilimovsky of Venice became so desperate for a place to train amid the closures, he opted for his uncle’s backyard pool. U.S. national team member Erica Sullivan of Las Vegas took a similar route, turning to the backyard pool of her attorney. Jordan Wilimovsky, bottom, leads John Gallant, top of the Mission Viejo Nadadores in Heat 2 of the Men’s 800 Freestyle on the first day of the 2020 Toyota U.S. Open Championships at the ...

Back rent in California nearing $1.7 billion, Fed study finds

California’s back rent is projected to reach nearly $1.7 billion by the end of the year, or almost a fourth of the total rental debt nationwide, a Federal Reserve study found. Under the state’s eviction moratorium, landlords can pursue that debt through small claims courts next spring if their tenants fail to repay it by then. In all, nearly 240,000 renter households in the state have fallen behind on rent, with an average debt of $6,953 per household, the study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Ph...

Alexander: There was a case for Mookie Betts as NL MVP

The numbers made the strongest case, obviously. The voting for the National League Most Valuable Player award, announced Thursday afternoon, went about the way most people expected, and it was pretty much a runaway. Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, the pride of El Modena High in Orange, received 28 of the 30 first-place votes and won easily, denying Mookie Betts the opportunity to be the only player besides Frank Robinson to win the MVP in both leagues. And while we hate to keep goi...

Rams’ Aaron Donald resumes chase vs. Seahawks’ Russell Wilson

THOUSAND OAKS — Aaron Donald and Russell Wilson meet again Sunday. Often, in the backfield, if it’s up to Donald. Like most great athletes, Donald remembers the ones that got away, so Wilson has been a source of frustration for as long as the Rams defensive tackle has been chasing the Seattle Seahawks quarterback around football fields. “It’s happened multiple times over my career playing against him, where I have him wrapped up and he finds a way to get the ball away,” Donald said in a video pr...

Candy Cane Lane, a festive display of El Segundo homes decked out in holiday lights, has been canceled for the first time since it began in 1949 because of the coronavirus pandemic, the city announced this week. Thousands of pedestrians have taken the stroll down the 1200 block of East Acacia Avenue each year for more than seven decades. The civil lawsuit Penny Toler filed against the L.A. Sparks in March is proceeding, scheduled to be heard in arbitration at a date to be determined. Her attorney, however, hasn’t given up hope that parts of it may yet go before a jury. She held that position until she was fired on Oct. 4, 2019, the day after E...

Chargers LB Kenneth Murray returns to starting role after brief benching

COSTA MESA — Chargers rookie linebacker Kenneth Murray made an immediate impact in his first training camp workout in August. He displayed sideline-to-sideline speed with a nose for the ball during his memorable summer debut. Teammates described him as a beast with tree trunks for legs. Murray likely won the starting middle linebacker job because of that first impression. The Chargers told Murray to rest for about a week after experiencing leg soreness on his second day of training camp. Murray ...

He claims regulatory boards in California and New Jersey are going to drive the gamblers away from the sport with their new whip restrictions. Horse racing can’t survive without the bettors. “Those gamblers, if they see you’re not trying, they’ll just quit the game. They won’t bet,” the 69-year-old Delahoussaye said in a 30-minute telephone interv...

End the irrational enforcement of infractions for minor offenses

Clifton Webb used to live on the streets of Sacramento. He received multiple citations for infractions, like not being able to pay for the bus. Each citation came with hundreds of dollars in unpayable fines. Without the funds to pay the fare, Clifton had to take the bus to go to court and risk receiving another citation in order to resolve the others. If he did not go, he risked a warrant for his arrest. While unhoused and living with addiction, Clifton was forced to navigate challenging systems...
