Atlanta Hawks 2020 Free Agency Spending Spree Thoughts

The Atlanta Hawks were arguably the most aggressive team when it came to free agency. With Trae Young being one of the up-and-coming stars in the league, Atlanta needed to make some moves. If you follow Trae on any of his social media pages, you know he wants to win. Next year, the Hawks can offer Young his max deal, but they must decide what to do with John Collins. Collins has stated he wants a max deal, but it seems like the Hawks aren’t thinking about it. Atlanta spent a lot of money and o...

A positive coronavirus test forces some John Wayne Airport air traffic controllers to quarantine

Operations at John Wayne Airport’s control tower have been cut back after some air traffic controllers were possibly exposed to an employee who recently tested positive for COVID-19, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said. One person’s positive test on Nov. 22 forced many of the airport’s controllers to self-quarantine and has resulted the tower closing earlier than normal each day, said Ian Gregor, public affairs specialist with the FAA. Through Sunday, there will only be two ...

Second-generation Laker Wesley Matthews fueled by championship opportunity

Wesley Matthews shared a name and with his father, but for a long time, there was little else. For many years, he was raised by his mother, Pam Moore, and he and his father were not terribly close. But one of the few through lines has been basketball: The day he was born – Oct. 18, 1986 – was the day that Wes Sr. signed with the Lakers, on his way to championships in 1987 and 1988. And the younger Matthews has a picture, “I’ve always had” of him as a toddler, dressed head-to-toe in denim at the ...

Looming Santa Ana winds whip up fire weather concerns for Thanksgiving day

Santa Ana winds are expected to blow into Southern California on Thanksgiving Day, prompting officials to warn residents of possible high fire danger conditions. The fire risk watch is a seemingly annual reminder of changing climate conditions, which bring dry weather at a time of year when historically, rain would give vegetation much needed moisture, weather officials said. Despite the continued relative cooling in the area of highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s, all other wildfire ingredients w...

LA County’s ban on in-person dining will hit low-income workers hardest, experts say

Los Angeles County’s shutdown of in-person dining will further slow the restaurant industry’s recovery and likely have a disproportionate economic impact on low-income workers, according to experts, though the effects will be less severe than the more expansive closures from when the coronavirus first hit the region in the spring. The shutdown will take effect at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, and last for at least three weeks. Health officials, for their part, have said in-person dining has been t...

Stop Los Angeles County’s foolish ban on outdoor dining

Los Angeles home cooks and restaurateurs practically invented year-round al fresco dining, because, well, we could: We have the world’s best climate for eating out of doors. That’s one reason why L.A. restaurants have pivoted out of necessity but with such poise toward all-outdoor meal service ever since they were allowed to reopen this past summer during the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic. It took investment — in personal protective equipment for staff, in training, in Plexiglass shields, i...

Rams ‘set up’ for a playoff run after win at Tampa Bay

The Rams’ victory at Tampa Bay on Monday Night Football showed the nation how far they’ve come in what shaped up as a transitional season and now looks like a playoff season. The Rams’ home game against San Francisco at SoFi Stadium on Sunday will remind themselves how far they’ve come in just the past month. It’s a rematch of the game in October in which the beaten-down Niners caught the visiting Rams napping and won 24-16. That loss prompted “reflection” by Rams players, quarterback Jared Goff...
