Backhand block

Hello Coach, I have trouble in blocking a strong top spin loop into my backhand corner. I find it more difficult against spinny slow and high loop than with fast, less spinny strokes. In fact, what I find is more challenging is all the body to ball coordination, and the timings, but also finding the right moment when to meet the the ball after the bounce. Sometimes I try to turn and counter with a FH topspin, which is effective when it works but risky. I feel that I prefer this risk though, than...

Newsom offers too little, too late for small businesses

Like a Band-aid on a broken neck, the state’s latest aid to small businesses demonstrates an awareness of the problem but a certain cluelessness about what’s needed to fix it. Gov. Gavin Newsom just signed an executive order giving small businesses a 90-day extension to file their first-quarter tax returns. Businesses with returns showing less than $1 million can wait until the end of the July to file and pay their taxes. This follows another order signed by Newsom at the end of November to allo...

Rams’ Brandon Staley isn’t defensive about head coaching rumors

THOUSAND OAKS — Brandon Staley has been the Rams’ defensive coordinator for less than a season, and people say he’s already set to move on and move up to a head coaching job. Not so fast, Staley said Wednesday at the Rams’ practice facility, throwing a full-on blitz at any idea that his mind is elsewhere just yet. “It’s humbling anytime you’re considered in those conversations,” Staley said in his regular weekly Zoom conference with reporters. “I think that’s what you’re after as a competitor, i...

Serra’s Devin Kirkwood stands by previous commitment to UCLA football

Serra’s Devin Kirkwood opened a lot of eyes earlier this month when he announced he was going to de-commit from UCLA. However, Wednesday on the first day of the early National Signing Period, Kirkwood confirmed his earlier thinking, recommitting to UCLA. “I just wanted to sit back and make sure I was making the right decision,” he said. “I decided to open up my recruitment and see what if I was doing was right. “After watching the game (against USC), I knew that UCLA was somewhere I needed to be...

Redondo Beach to rent five units at private homeless shelter — in Wilmington

The Redondo Beach City Council this week set aside $30,000 in federal grant funds to rent five apartment units in a private transitional housing complex in Wilmington, an action that caused outrage Wednesday, Dec. 16, from the Los Angeles City Council member who represents the Harbor Area neighborhood. The units, beginning Jan. 1, will temporarily house those who are homeless in Redondo Beach until they can secure a permanent place to live with the help of an outreach coordinator. The complex is...

First female Marine drill instructors graduate from an integrated course at San Diego recruit depot

Sgt. Stephanie Fahl is shouldering great expectations. Eight years ago, the 33-year-old San Diego resident went through boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island in South Carolina. Her drill instructors inspired her then and she hopes now to carry that same motivation forward as she helps to forge the Corps’ newest Marines. Facing criticism, new L.A. County district attorney insists defendants prosecuted will face accountability

By TERRI VERMEULEN KEITH LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón — who is under fire less than two weeks into his term from families of some crime victims for directives that are expected to result in lower sentences in many cases — said Wednesday he’s “troubled” by what he called “fear-mongering” and vowed that those who are prosecuted under his administration will face accountability. With calls already underway for a recall attempt, the county’s newly seated top prose...

More murkiness from L.A. Sheriff’s Dept. in Guardado killing

All Americans, not just fictional characters in TV legal dramas, have the right to take the 5th — to invoke their constitutional rights not to testify in court if it might incriminate themselves. But when those invoking the 5th Amendment are four law-enforcement officers, none of whom have been charged in a crime, it’s not just the optics that don’t look so good. It’s once again the chance for justice and a clear insight into how policing works that has been impaired after 18-year-old Andres Gua...

Alexander: Scott Boras suggests a baseball CEO – what if MLB offered it to him?

The question is probably moot because Scott Boras is already one of baseball’s most influential people. But during the agent’s Zoom conversation with national and local baseball writers this week – a substitute for his annual press conference at the Winter Meetings – among his tidbits was a suggestion that the game should hire a CEO to deal with some of the business aspects of the game that the lawyers in Commissioner Rob Manfred’s office don’t handle so well. If you worked for MLB, wouldn’t thi...

USC football recruiting gets back to normal with highly rated early signing class for 2021

If ever there was a chance for Clay Helton to take a victory lap, it was on Wednesday. A year ago, Helton faced repeated questions about the state of the program and its recruiting future in the face of a signing class that paled in comparison to USC’s tradition and stature, bringing up the rear in the Pac-12 and ranking outside the top 50 nationally. And as the early signing period began on Wednesday, Helton had a host of results that could have chosen to brandish as validation for the patience...

The suit, filed in Riverside County Superior Court Wednesday on behalf of a Southern California boy, alleges that AYSO officials, including a local child and volunteer protection advocate and board member, were aware Stephen Morga...
