Clippers close preseason play with a vocabulary test

LOS ANGELES — The Clippers are cramming to master as much of new coach Tyronn Lue’s curriculum as possible before Tuesday’s test against the Lakers counts for credit. Basketball is a group project, of course, so in Thursday’s final preseason practice test against Utah, the focus was to be on vocabulary and speech. “The biggest thing for me right now is our communication,” Lue said. “I think when you’re trying to learn a new system, the biggest thing that fails is your communication. You don’t kn...

Rams COVID-19 scare keeps five players out of practice

THOUSAND OAKS — The Rams were dealing with their most extensive COVID-19 scare of the season Thursday night after one player’s positive test for the virus led to five being held out of practice. Offensive tackle Bobby Evans, center Brian Allen, safety Nick Scott and linebackers Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and Justin Hollins missed Thursday afternoon’s practice at Cal Lutheran University. NFL rules prevented the team from saying which of them received a positive result in daily testing, and which were hel...

New L.A. County D.A. George Gascón’s reforms are hitting courtrooms, and at least one judge wasn’t happy

The sweeping directives Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón issued on his first day in office are rankling longtime justice system officials, with the fight now playing out in some courtrooms. Almost as soon as Gascón announced his reforms in his inaugural speech earlier this month, the powerful Association of Los Angeles Deputy District Attorneys representing hundreds of county prosecutors balked at the announcements. And several of the area’s largest police unions signaled shock...

For Dodgers’ Dave Roberts, relief, joy of World Series win giving way to 2021 planning

LOS ANGELES — Something is missing from Dave Roberts’ winter. For the first time in his tenure as Dodgers manager, Roberts is going about his offseason without a soundtrack of second-guessing. His every October pitching decision is not being dissected, criticized and, in some quarters, used as a cudgel to question his suitability to continue in his current job. “It’s a nice change,” Roberts said on Thursday, conducting his annual Winter Meetings question-and-answer session with the media via Zoo...

The folly of California’s outdoor dining ban

“No fair.” That’s what a five-year-old child would say to a set of rules that applied different restrictions to different people for no discernible reason. Even a five-year-old child would recognize that something has gone terribly wrong in California. A double standard of pandemic restrictions is forcing restaurants out of business for no valid reason. Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer issued a new order closing outdoor dining – the only type of restaurant dining then all...

NBA investigating Clippers, Jerry West over Kawhi Leonard recruitment allegations

The NBA is investigating allegations made in a lawsuit filed this week against Jerry West and the Clippers accusing the Hall of Famer and the team for which he consults with breach of contract, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. On Monday, Johnny Wilkes filed a lawsuit in L.A. Superior Court that claims West promised to pay him $2.5 million for his help in 2019 recruiting star forward Kawhi Leonard, money that wasn’t paid. According to the complaint, because Wilkes expected t...

As Congress debates another round of stimulus aid, a local union’s analysis of hotels in Southern California and Phoenix shows hotels that accessed Paycheck Protection Program loans have done little to return workers to their jobs. Unite Here Local 11‘s report — which analyzed hotel employment levels in Los Angeles County, Orange County and Phoenix from May to October — notes that unemployment in tourism and travel remains near 90%. Lakers’ Kyle Kuzma keeps grinding despite uncertain future

No one in the locker room has been a Laker longer than Kyle Kuzma. How is it, then, that four years into his career, so much about the 25-year-old’s future seems so cloudy? Even Kuzma seems to struggle with it. When asked what his role was for the upcoming season, fresh off a 23-point preseason performance on Wednesday, Kuzma demurred. “I have no idea,” he said. “We’ll see.” It’s a common refrain for Kuzma this preseason: He also said “we’ll see” about whether his big preseason minutes (109, the...

Alexander: Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott gives another unbelievable performance

Listening to Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott’s Zoom conference on Thursday, in the run-up to Friday night’s conference football championship* game between USC and Oregon, I was struck by a comparison. And I don’t think he’ll like it. Scott reminds me a lot of Frank McCourt, the reviled former owner of the Dodgers – i.e., the guy who used the ballclub as his personal ATM and ultimately ran it into the ground. That’s not the exact comparison I had in mind, though it might fit. The similarity that ...

Chargers make Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler active for ‘TNF’ vs. Raiders

Running back Austin Ekeler (quadricep) and wide receivers Keenan Allen (hamstring) and Mike Williams (back) were made active 90 minutes before kickoff at Allegiant Stadium. Rookie quarterback Justin Herbert will have plenty of throwing options against a Raiders defense that is allowing 30.1 points per game, third worst in the NFL. The Raiders will be thin on defense with many starters sidel...

‘Bursting at seams’: LA County COVID hospitalizations reach stunning 5,100; ICU index drops to 0%

Hospitals across Los Angeles County were being pushed to the brink on Thursday, Dec. 17, as the number of patients admitted with the coronavirus reached 5,100, based on a state dashboard that reports the number a daily earlier than the county. Southern California as a whole was down to 0% available ICU beds — a chilling metric that bottomed out Thursday after steadily declining  for more than a week — though hospitals were adapting with surge planning and increasing the number of patients that n...
