Ducks re-sign Ryan Miller, filling out their goaltending rotation for 2020-21

As expected, the Ducks filled out their goaltending rotation for the upcoming season by re-signing Ryan Miller to a one-season, $1 million contract on Wednesday. Miller served as John Gibson’s backup for the past three seasons, his 15th, 16th and 17th in the NHL. Gibson will have two backups for 2020-21, a move mandated for all teams by the league as it attempts to stage a 56-game season in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Miller will be one of the three as he tries to add to his 387 caree...

Lakers’ season-opening loss shows they’re still learning how to play together

It was weeks ago that Anthony Davis was running his first pick-and-rolls with Dennis Schrӧder. In a normal year, they’d have at least a month of pick-up games before the start of training camp. On Tuesday night, some of the growing pains were unfolding live. On one possession, Davis nearly lost the ball when Schrӧder made a blind pass over his shoulder to where he thought his All-Star teammate would be. “We haven’t had that much time together,” Davis said. “Me and Dennis on pick-and-rolls still ...

Judge denies Torrance, Long Beach tattoo shops challenge to health order

There will be no tattoos in Torrance and Long Beach in time for Christmas. A federal judge has rejected a legal challenge — led by the owner of a tattoo shop in Old Torrance shuttered under the latest state health orders intended to slow the spread of the coronavirus — that argued such parlors had a First Amendment right to remain open. Tiffany Garcia-Mitchell, owner of Black Raven Tattoo, along with the owners of tattoo shops in Long Beach and Thousand Oaks, had sought a temporary restraining o...

Hoornstra: ‘Elevating’ the Negro Leagues requires more than numbers

A Sunday column on the front page of the Kansas City Star ran under the headline “An apology from the Star.” “Today we are telling the story of a powerful local business that has done wrong,” editor Mike Fannin wrote. That business? The newspaper itself. The apology was directed to the Black community of Kansas City. The column accompanied an examination of the paper’s shameful history of racially biased reporting dating back more than a century. Four days earlier, Major League Baseball issued a...

Newsom introduces history-making appointees Padilla and Weber – and their ‘American dream’ stories

“¡Muchísimas Gracias!” It was a thank you in Spanish from Alex Padilla, a Latino Californian headed to the U.S. Senate. Padilla was raised by immigrants in blue-collar Pacoima. Then came another thank you from Shirley Weber, on her way to becoming the state’s top elections official, the first Black Californian to ascend to the role. She might not have ever landed in the Golden State if her father wasn’t fleeing from an Arkansas lynch mob. The ink was still drying Wednesday on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s...

Rams’ short Pro Bowl honor roll leaves top defense with more to prove

The Rams shouldn’t need extra motivation when they face the Seahawks in Seattle on Sunday with a chance to clinch a playoff spot and reclaim first place in the NFC West. But if the Rams want a little more fire, Pro Bowl voters might have lit it. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald and cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who received their perennial recognition, were the only Rams honored when Pro Bowl rosters were announced on Monday. Meanwhile, Seattle was one of several teams with seven Pro Bowlers, including ...

USC football’s 2020 defined by contradictions, like much of the Clay Helton era

USC football’s 2020 season was another reminder of the frequent contradictions that pop up when trying to evaluate Clay Helton as the Trojans’ head coach. The Trojans won all five of their regular-season games, but needed three fourth-quarter comebacks against so-so opponents to make it to 5-0. USC showed clear improvement from a year ago, especially with its new defensive scheme, but its old pitfalls (penalties and turnovers) reared their heads in the worst possible moment, in the Pac-12 title ...

This year, the coronavirus pandemic along with the recent stay-at-home order have thrown a wrench in every holiday celebration, and Christmas hasn’t been spared. Chargers WR Keenan Allen hoping to extend his games played streak

COSTA MESA — Keenan Allen often pointed to his games played and Pro Bowl streaks for reasons why he’s one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and not the injury-prone player he was to start his career. Entering this season, Allen didn’t need to point to his recent accomplishments. The four-year, $80 million contract extension Allen received from the Chargers did the talking. Allen had nothing to prove, but his consecutive games played streak was on his mind when he ran warm-up drills last week...

Broken promises send local license-plate data to ICE

When a law enforcement agency seeks the approval of its civilian, elected leaders in order to play with — er, employ — sophisticated surveillance technology, and promises as part of the deal not to share the harvested data with a sometimes-nefarious federal agency, it ought to keep its promise, yes? Well, in the event, no — when the Pasadena Police Department started to use automatic license plate readers out on the streets, it did not keep its promise to the City Council to not hand that data o...
