Kings add technique to their trademark persistence

As the Kings were set to cut the ribbon on their 2021 season, Coach Todd McLellan attempted to explain who the Kings were, a year into his system and approaching three years removed from the playoffs. “The group as a whole still has a lot of winning or championship traits in it,” McLellan said. “It’s hard to get that instilled into a group when they don’t have it.” McLellan said he believes the structure and pace of his team improved. The goal personnel-wise was to add speed and skill while main...

49ers Defensive Coordinator Robert Saleh Becomes Jets New Head Coach

NEW YORK (AP/CBS13) – The New York Jets were searching for a leader, someone who could bring a frustrated, playoff-starved franchise back to respectability. They think they found their guy in Robert Saleh. The Jets reached an agreement in principle with the popular and energetic San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Thursday night to hire him as their head coach. Saleh replaces Adam Gase, who was fired on Jan. 3 after going 9-23 in two seasons. The 41-year-old Saleh emerged as a favorite for...

Free agent left-hander Alex Wood leaves Dodgers for rival Giants

Left-hander Alex Wood pitched 14 innings in three separate World Series for the Dodgers – including two scoreless innings in the clinching Game 6 last fall – but he will be pitching for their rival next season. Wood agreed to a one-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. The contract guarantees him $3 million in salary but could double through a series of incentives. Wood joins reliever Pedro Baez as free agents leaving the Dodgers. Baez signed a two-year deal with the Houston A...

With limited ways to build chemistry, Lakers’ on-court success has helped

After Tuesday night in Houston, Dennis Schröder’s pockets were a little bit lighter, but he didn’t seem to mind. A little light betting is part of the ecosystem of many teams. A post-practice shooting session has a touch more urgency if there are a couple of bucks on the line. Flubs like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s or Montrezl Harrell’s missed dunks can be a little funnier knowing that they’ll have to “put something in the pot,” as Schröder put it. And then there are moments like LeBron James’ no...

Chuting Gallery Survivors

Although it was never intended to be skied in its entirety, the 90+ lines and accompanying check boxes make The Chuting Gallery a logical steep skiing ticklist for the Wasatch. It took about five years of collecting lines to write the book and since then about ten people have collected the entire set. Skiing/riding them all in one year has still yet to be done, but I wouldn’t doubt that it is possible with the right year, right person and right strategy. Hint: don’t save the hardest for last....

1 in every 3 LA County people have had coronavirus, researchers estimate

Nearly a year after it began ravaging the region, coronavirus has infected one in every three Los Angeles County residents, according to the county’s latest estimates. The statistics, released on Wednesday by the county’s Department of Health Services, suggest  a spread much wider than even the county’s own confirmed toll. Related links Coronavirus: L.A. L.A. County strives to step up vaccines, but seniors told they’ll have to wait until February

Public health officials worked to clarify Los Angeles County’s coronavirus timetable on Thursday, Jan. 14, as many seniors found themselves confused over when exactly they could sign up for a vaccine — and why they must wait, likely for another month, for those  shots — after Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday they could get them immediately. Another 287 people, meanwhile, lost their lives to the outbreak, officials announced. Despite the governor’s announcement on widening vaccine delivery, th...

Rams QB Jared Goff regains his grip on starting role

THOUSAND OAKS — First Jared Goff’s thumb was fractured and dislocated. Then his nose was out of joint. The emotion came through in Goff’s clipped answers to questions in the week before the playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks and his uncharacteristically edgy comments after he came off the bench to help the Rams win 30-20. Rams coach Sean McVay didn’t mind the edge in the voice of the famously even-keel quarterback. “I think that’s a good edge,” McVay said. “I think It shows his competitiv...

LA city firefighter union agrees to delay raises, joining civilian workers in bid to avoid layoffs

A 4.5% pay raise scheduled for Los Angeles city firefighters would be delayed by 18 months, under a tentative labor agreement reached with the city in order to avoid potential layoffs or other cuts due to an anticipated $675 million shortfall in the city budget. The leadership of the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City, which represents more than 3,200 city firefighters, has agreed to defer the raise that was scheduled to begin this summer, for 18 months. This comes after the leadership of t...
