We asked for more offense. Well, we got it. After Toronto allowed three odd-man rushes to Edmonton in the first four minutes, it was clear this game wasn’t going to be as boring as the last time these two teams met. Things did start to tighten up a bit after that, but there was noticeably […] The post Leafs Report Cards: Power play remains hot, Andersen sharp as Leafs earn split versus Edmonton appeared first on Maple Leafs Hotstove.

Whicker: Hank Aaron hammered his way into record books, past the hate

Tim McCarver never had to look up from his catcher’s nest. He knew it was Hank Aaron, stepping in. “He would get in the box and then he would clear his throat,” McCarver said. “Ahem. Every time.” Aaron was calling the meeting to order. He already knew what pitch he wanted and was pretty sure when he would get it. On April 8, 1974, he told Dusty Baker he was tired of the Great Home Run Chase. “Let’s get it over with,” he said, and then took the Dodgers’ Al Downing over the left field fence in Atl...

San Dimas biotech startup Curative captures large slice of coronavirus test market

In less than a year, a once-obscure biotech startup in San Dimas, headed by a 26-year-old Oxford dropout, captured a large slice of the coronavirus test market – manufacturing and processing 14 million tests nationwide to date. Fueled by dollars from venture capitalists, Curative Inc. developed, at lightning speed, a self-administered oral-swab test with a turnaround time of 48 hours. Last spring, the company found itself within the circle of more than 100 federally approved companies from acros...

Negotiations continue between LAUSD, teachers union on hybrid learning

The teachers union and representatives for the Los Angeles Unified School District had yet to reach agreements on providing services to high-needs students and a hybrid instructional model as of the afternoon on Friday, Jan. 22 — two days before their self-imposed deadline for coming to terms on these issues. It’s unclear what the repercussions might be if the union and district are unable to reach agreements by Sunday, though the parties could mutually consent to extend the deadline. Even if ag...

Angels GM Perry Minasian seeks more pitching after making Jose Quintana deal official

On the day the Angels completed the deal to bolster their starting rotation with Jose Quintana, Perry Minasian said he’s not done. The Angels’ new general manager said Friday he remains “very active,” on both the trade and free agent markets when it comes to acquiring more pitching help for a team whose run-prevention has been its downfall in recent years. Asked how many more starters he’d like to add, Minasian said he’s not limiting himself. “I think if you ask 29 other GMs, it’s as many as the...

Rocky start to 2021 leaves Dry January a little damp

By Leanne Italie | Associated Press NEW YORK — A raging pandemic, tumultuous presidential election and deadly Capitol insurrection have combined to make the annual tradition of Dry January more moist than air-tight for some. Not Sarah Arvizo. She considers it her easiest yet. As much as the 32-year-old Manhattanite would love to partake in a little “vinopeutics,” she said the abstinence period she’s participated in for several years has been made smoother this time around by her at-home pandemic...

Senior Living: What story will you tell in 2021?

Let me tell you one of my favorite stories. When I was a child, my grandmother proudly and confidently asserted that I would be the first person in my family to attend college. In an effort to prepare and inspire me, she would drive me around the campus of the University of California, Irvine – in a 1984 bronze Buick Regal – and educate me on what makes a college a college and a university a university and that if I wanted to impress people in life, I should attend the latter. To the mind of a 1...
