LA, Long Beach ports weather storms, record cargo and COVID-19 surges

Additional sea patrols were ordered on Wednesday, Jan. 27, as Southern California port officials kept an extra close watch on the arrival of a two-day storm that’s expected to dump significant rain on Southern California starting on Thursday. Officials hope forecasters are right and the winds will be less fierce than those earlier in the week that sent about two dozen huge cargo ships fleeing from the local harbors for protection. But the Coast Guard and other agencies weren’t taking any chances...

Rotor Aldhu Carbon crankset adds ultralight option to modular drivetrain system

Rotor’s known more for their oval chainrings, but we’d argue their complete cranksets are very much worth a look, too. They’re sleek, light and stiff…and now there’s an even lighter option: The all-new Rotor Aldhu Carbon comes in at just 260g for the arms, and the rest of the kit doesn’t add much more… Rotor […] The post Rotor Aldhu Carbon crankset adds ultralight option to modular drivetrain system appeared first on Bikerumor.

Now with 76ers, Danny Green and Dwight Howard trying to win another title

It was the fourth quarter when the reunion started to get physical. When Dwight Howard is your opponent instead of your teammate, expect hard screens and scrappy play. He ran afoul of Montrezl Harrell, then his former teammate Markieff Morris as each received a technical foul. But then again, what’s a little wrestling between brothers? That’s how Howard and Danny Green described their past with the Lakers, when they were fundamental pieces of the 2020 title team: a brotherhood. And even though b...

The search for ancient Martian life will begin in three weeks

Aiming for a precarious and hazard-laden crater next to an ancient riverbed on Mars, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech will try to land the most sophisticated rover built to-date, Perseverance, hoping to find fossilized clues of ancient life and lay the groundwork for future manned missions to the red planet. The search begins in just three weeks, as scientists and engineers prepare for a Feb. 18 landing — or, rather, they’re preparing the rover to land itself — and hoping it com...

LA County’s K-6 schools could reopen in weeks, if coronavirus stats comply

Los Angeles County elementary schools could reopen in as soon as 3-4 weeks, the county’s public health chief said on Wednesday, Jan. 27. But it will take a massive, disciplined effort to reduce coronavirus case rates, she warned, as businesses and households emerge from the recent lockdown. Public health officials were meeting with local business owners and labor groups in preparation of a new public health order that would likely be issued Thursday, officially allowing restaurants to reopen for...

Clippers cool off from 3-point range – and not at a great time

It wasn’t going to rain forever. Even as the Clippers were draining 44.1% of their 3-point shots – a breakneck pace more prolific than even the 1996-97 Charlotte Hornets’ historic season-long rate of 42.7% – Coach Tyronn Lue figured the downpour would relent eventually. “We know we’re going to have some nights where we don’t shoot the ball as well,” Lue said on Jan. 20, a night when the Clippers shot it just fine, going 16 for 35 from deep to beat Sacramento, 115-96. And when that happens, Lue a...

Alexander: Xander Schauffele hopes playing at home helps … for a change

Even though Tiger Woods grew up in Orange County and, as far as we know, never made his home in San Diego for an extended period, it always felt like Torrey Pines was his home course. La Jolla’s PGA Tour stop has customarily been Woods’ first tournament of the new year, and if nothing else the 2008 U.S. Open and a hobbled Tiger’s 91-hole showdown with Rocco Mediate on that track probably cemented the link between player and course. But Tiger is sitting it out as the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open b...

There’s A Reason For The Morning Skate

from Joshua Clipperon of the CP at CBC, D.J. Smith knows what the data suggests. NHL players strapping on their gear for a morning skate seven or eight hours before a game probably isn't the best use of energy. But in an abbreviated, pandemic-condensed season where practice time is limited and days off priceless, the Ottawa Senators head coach sees benefits in a hockey tradition that, for many in recent years, has come to be viewed as nothing more than an archaic nod to the pa...
