Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes: It’s been an even battle so far

There was a regular-season shootout and a playoff masterpiece the first season that Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady met on a football field. Brady came out ahead in those two meetings, but Mahomes has gotten the edge the past two times they met. Now as they are set to meet on football’s biggest stage of the Super Bowl, it’s time to look back at those first four games when they shared a field. While their teams split those contests, Mahomes has put up the better numbers with his 109.2 passer rating...

Adam Henrique scratched from Ducks’ lineup in shakeup vs. Blues

ANAHEIM — Adam Henrique played in all 71 games of the Ducks’ coronavirus pandemic-shortened season in 2019-20. He played in all 82 games in 2018-19 and 57 games in 2017-18, after they acquired him from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for Sami Vatanen on Nov. 30, 2017. But when the Ducks took the ice Sunday to face the St. Louis Blues at Honda Center, Henrique was not in their lineup. Coach Dallas Eakins shuffled the Ducks’ lines dramatically less than 24 hours after a 6-1 loss to the Blues, th...

Patrick Reed wins at Torrey Pines, but another cloud comes with it

If golf fans want to obsess on Patrick Reed’s latest collision with controversy, it’s partially his fault. Rams’ big play to get Matthew Stafford reshapes the offense

Matthew Stafford has always been known for how hard and far he can throw a football. He’s a gunslinger, strong-armed and dangerous. Dangerous to foes, sometimes to friends. The story goes that Detroit Lions receivers cranked up the Jugs machine to practice catching high-velocity passes without snapping off fingers, only to conclude Stafford threw faster than the apparatus. Before he had begun college at Georgia, draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. saw that arm in action and famously predicted (accuratel...

Biden should ditch these flawed assumptions about North Korea

Every United States president over the last 30 years has entered the White House thinking they will be the one to finally solve the North Korean nuclear problem. And without fail, every U.S. president during this same time frame has left office with the problem more deeply entrenched. The trend is likely to continue if President Joe Biden doesn’t endorse a dramatic break in the conventional orthodoxy. Many of the Biden administration’s top foreign policy officials have first-hand experience deal...

MLB proposes delaying start of season, playing 154 games, expanding playoffs

NEW YORK — Major League Baseball has proposed a one-month delay in starting spring training due to the coronavirus pandemic and pushing back opening day to April 28, two people familiar with the plan told the Associated Press. Under the plan presented to the players’ union on Friday, the regular season would be cut from 162 games to 154. Also, the playoffs would be expanded from 10 teams to 14, the designated hitter would extend to the National League for the second straight season and MLB would...

Yep, Greuther Fürth attacker Julian Green is currently in the richest vein of form in his career to date. He made it goals in three straight games by applying the capper to a 3-0 Friday night win over Erzgebirge Aue (took a while for a clip to surface) that kept his team right in the thick of the race for promotion to the Bundesliga. Tide Super Bowl LV commercial features 'Jason Alexander Hoodie'

Jason Alexander plays a supporting role in a commercial for Tide that will air during Super Bowl LV next week, while the real star of the ad is the hoodie with his face on it.  The commercial starts with a mom walking into her teenage son's bedroom and asking her to wash the Jason Alexander hoodie. The boy has a typical reaction, as he looks over at the hoodie laying on top of a chair in his room and says "It looks clean to me."  The mother expresses some doubt: "Is it though?"     As...

Lakers’ thrilling win in Boston thrusts their rotation dilemma to center stage

It might seem surprising, but it shouldn’t be, that NBA players pay attention to analytics, too. The one that caught Jared Dudley’s eye last week — and which he naturally chatted up to the team — was this: Even when the Lakers lose, Alex Caruso is a net positive player, with the team outscoring opponents by 29 points in his 92 minutes. That stat passed through Anthony Davis’ mind as he thought on Caruso’s potential game-saving play Saturday night in Boston, when he raced to snake an arm between ...

17-year-old and 18-year-old killed in Palmdale hit-and-run

A motorist ran a red light and struck another car in Palmdale, leaving two people dead Saturday, Jan. 30,  then fled the scene, officials said Sunday. The crash happened at about 10:22 p.m. at 10th Street West and Avenue O-8, LASD Deputy Tracy Koerner said. Detectives believe the suspect slammed into a 2018 Honda Civic in the intersection, then took off in a 2015 Chrysler 200. A 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man inside the Honda died at the scene of the crash, Koerner said. Their identities...

Mentally Exhausting

Watching the Wings this season has already become mentally exhausting. Nothing is normal. We're just starting the season, and, almost a quarter into the season. This mental fog is partially due to the uncertainty we're all dealing with every single day. Maybe we can all sit back, go with the flow, and if at all possible, enjoy the three hours of bad hockey we're about to see together.  All joking is welcomed, and, encouraged. It's a Live Blog!
