Canoga Park shelter is first of new wave of efforts to help homeless in west San Fernando Valley

The west San Fernando Valley hit a milestone on Friday, Feb. 12, with the grand opening of a temporary shelter that is expected to bring more than 80 people experiencing homelessness in from the streets. This part of the Valley, west of the I-405 freeway, has long been short on shelter space, leaving many people who find themselves homeless in this area to look to the east San Fernando Valley and other parts of the city for shelter and services. Many end up setting up makeshift shelters of their...

Lakers tighten rotation again, but keep Wesley Matthews in

LOS ANGELES — The return of Anthony Davis and Alex Caruso is a good thing for Coach Frank Vogel, a step closer to the Lakers becoming whole. But as it has all season, a full roster means gut-wrenching decisions with the lineup, ones that Vogel has acknowledged have gotten to him this year on a team that is possibly the deepest he’s ever coached. After benching veterans Markieff Morris and Wesley Matthews in late January, the Lakers were able to play both in the void created by injuries that kept...

Trump lawyers: Impeachment based on hatred, not facts

By ERIC TUCKER, LISA MASCARO and MARY CLARE JALONICK WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s impeachment lawyers accused Democrats of waging a campaign of “hatred” against the former president as they sped through their defense of his actions and fiery words before the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, hurtling the Senate toward a final vote in his historic trial. The defense team vigorously denied on Friday that Trump had incited the deadly riot and said his encouragement of followers to “fight...

LA County scrambles to solve coronavirus vaccine riddle, as state grows eligibility list

“Breaking news” from Sacramento — California officials’ announcement that as many as 6 million additional people may be eligible for the coronavirus vaccine, including people age 16-64 who have high-risk health conditions — left Los Angeles County health officials with a quandary. “I think this is sort of breaking news and we’re going to have to spend some time to think about what the implications are for our planning,” said Dr. Paul Simon, the county’s chief science officer. “But it certainly  ...

Clippers’ G League contingent gets going in the bubble

For many members of the Agua Caliente Clippers just beginning play in the G League bubble, a span of 335 days separated Thursday’s single-site, season-opening loss to Grande Valley Vipers and their last official, professional basketball action. Not so for Amir Coffey, the second-year two-way player who logged four minutes Feb. 3 in a victory for the NBA’s Clippers in Cleveland, his 16th appearance this NBA season. Coffey also participated in the NBA bubble last summer when the league returned to...

Regulators on Poseidon desalination plant received calls that are likely prohibited

Three members of the regulatory board considering approval of the controversial Poseidon desalination plant were called by the state’s environmental protection secretary at the time of last summer’s deliberations, an apparent violation of a rule that in serious cases can disqualify members from voting on the issue. While Secretary Jared Blumenfeld’s calls and texts last summer didn’t explicitly solicit a vote for the Huntington Beach project, the gubernatorial appointee noted in at least two of ...

Since Capitol riot, Southern California Republicans are leaving the party

On paper, 54-year-old David Doss of Huntington Beach has been a Republican since he was 18, when he first registered to vote and joined the GOP as a way to push back against his liberal parents. “My rebellious stage was being a Republican,” Doss said with a chuckle. Since then he’s voted for Republicans, Democrats, independents and third-party candidates whose values aligned with his own. He always felt he leaned a bit more on the liberal side, just as his parents had hoped, but he never bothere...

With resources shifted to vaccines, L.A. County opens more test sites

As Los Angeles County officials shifted resources in January from coronavirus testing to vaccinating, the number of tests performed each day across the county dropped precipitously. The decline in tests occurred almost immediately after the city of Los Angeles turned the Dodger Stadium mass testing site into a mass vaccination site on Jan. 15. At that time, the county was performing more than 100,000 tests per day, based on data provided by the Department of Public Health. But in the weeks proce...

Dodgers’ Trevor Bauer on his online behavior: ‘I’m doing my best to be better’

LOS ANGELES — A Feb. 2019 profile of Trevor Bauer in Sports Illustrated included this self-assessment by the right-hander who has made iconoclasm his brand. “I’m good at two things in this world,” Bauer is quoted as telling a former teammate. “Throwing baseballs and pissing people off.” The Dodgers have signed Bauer – for $102 million over three years – to exhibit the first talent. It remains to be seen how much of the second they will have to stomach along the way. Bauer’s acknowledged ability...

Not only did they seem to have removed the dangerous line from the nest on Thursday, Feb. 11, the female, Jackie, also laid another egg. The raptors, whose nest activities high above Big Bear Lake are broadcast on a live webcam, had their first eggs in January, but all of those were lost, two to ravens, and one to breakage.
