Authorities identified one of the protesters who allegedly forced their way into the U.S. Capitol during a fatal riot on Jan. 6 as a UCLA student from Costa Mesa who founded a pro-conservative campus organization; and arrested him Tuesday, Feb. 16. Federal agents in Orange County took Christian Secor, 22, into custody after searching his Costa Mesa home Tuesday, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. Do the Kings have a goalie controversy brewing?

As the Kings navigate a campaign fraught with shifting schedules, rotating personnel and intense rivalries, they might now also have something of a goaltending controversy on their hands. The incumbent No.1 goalie Jonathan Quick – he of two Stanley Cups, an Olympic silver medal and a Conn Smythe Trophy – had played roughly one period in the Kings’ previous five games, and statistically had been outperformed by challenger Cal Petersen. Quick, 35, and Petersen, 26, are not only separated generatio...

LAUSD has safety measures in place, but much work remains before return to campus

Long before public health officials announced this week that elementary schools in Los Angeles County can finally reopen because the county’s daily rate of new COVID-19 cases has fallen low enough to meet reopening standards, officials in the Los Angeles Unified School District had submitted its plan for bringing students back to campus to the state and county. Frank Vogel relieved Anthony Davis’ injury isn’t more serious, but knows Lakers face a challenge

In those late hours of Sunday night, the Lakers thought they had a good handle on what Anthony Davis’ injury was. The initial evaluation was a strain, and Davis knocked on wood as he said: “they say everything looks good … “… but you still want the MRI just to make sure.” The MRI on Monday morning in Denver brought the relatively good news the Lakers had hoped for: Davis’ right Achilles tendon was intact, but needed rest. Coach Frank Vogel said he felt relief. “All of our hope that it wasn’t any...

For a family devastated by COVID-19, Mariachi serenade provides a moment of hope

Patty Trejo wanted some way to let her husband, Joe Trejo, know that she’s with him even as he breathes through a ventilator. So she turned to music. Trejo hired a mariachi band to serenade him outside Providence St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton.  And on Monday, Feb. 15, inside his room in the hospital’s intensive care unit, their song “La Mano de Dios” (The Hand of God) was streamed live via a cell phone. Joe Trejo, in a medically induced coma as he struggles with COVID-19, heard the song, ...

By Caroline Kelly and Brian Rokus | CNN Former President Donald Trump went after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday, calling him “a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” in a broadside attack just days after the Kentucky Republican voted to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial. After that vote, McConnell ripped Trump in a speech from the Senate floor, and the two have been estranged in recent months after working closely together during the former President’s four ye...

Just talk it over with your dog

My partner Andrew does a lot of things better than I do. He’s more organized, for example. He’s a man who loves a good “to do” list. So while I’m being a lump on the couch watching Golden Girls reruns, he can often be seen bouncing around the house humming to himself while he ticks off his to-do’s like a seasoned project manager with OCD on an Adderall binge. If it wasn’t so adorable, I’d be annoyed by it. He’s also a better dog dad. There. I said it. He has a gentle way about him that animals r...
