Alexander: At Riviera, sunshine alone is no antidote

If you were watching sports on TV Saturday afternoon and it wasn’t college basketball, you might have come away confused. The sun was shining, brightly and brilliantly, yet there were weather delays. Evidently, golf and hockey have more in common than you think. The first of this year’s NHL outdoor games in Lake Tahoe, between Vegas and Colorado, was halted after one period, to resume Saturday night at 9 p.m. because the sun was shining too brightly and the ice quality was suffering. Meanwhile a...

Slippery floor and footwork

Hi, coach! I am playing in the club which has slippery tile floor about 1.5 years. First times it was impossible to play. Then I bought a sneaker with a good grip. It helps. But it is still not safe. Recently I noticed that my footwork got very bad. I agree I didn't pay attention to my footwork last years, but my footwork was not such bad. Furthermore I am playing much more often than 1.5 years ago. In the past I played once in 2 weeks, last times 3-4 times in a week. Can this be a result of sli...

Regarding handle grip

Hello Alois, One of my friends who plays championships suggested me to hold the grip close to the bat with no gap left. His point was that it then becomes an extension of your hand and improves your footwork.I started trying the same and found it difficult as it was about unlearning my earlier grip.Could you please give your thoughts on this suggestion and the best way to hold the bat?

USC falls to Arizona, snapping 7-game win streak

After a quiet first half, No. 17 USC knew it would need a herculean effort from center Evan Mobley to come back against Arizona on Saturday at the Galen Center. The Trojans got it, with the 7-foot freshman scoring 19 of his 23 after halftime. But with little help from the rest of his teammates, it wasn’t enough as Arizona beat USC 71-62, ending the Trojans’ seven-game winning streak. It was clear from the start that USC (18-4, 12-3 in Pac-12) was going to have its hands full against a feisty Ari...

Recall gives voters a needed check on governor’s power

SACRAMENTO – As opponents of Gov. Gavin Newsom come closer to placing a recall on the ballot, some pundits have argued that voters should only boot a sitting politician for grievous misbehavior such as crimes and malfeasance. “Recalls should be reserved for elected officials who are corrupt or extremely incompetent,” as the San Diego Union-Tribune recently opined. That view is wildly at odds with how Gov. Hiram Johnson – the progressive governor who ushered in our state’s initiative, referendum ...

California can’t just run on sunshine and breezes

A few days before the lights went out in Texas, the California Public Utilities Commission quietly authorized the state’s largest investor-owned utilities to purchase more power over the next few months in order to avoid rolling blackouts this summer. Last August, more than 800,000 people were left without electricity during a heat wave. The CPUC said the utilities – Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric and Sempra Energy’s San Diego Gas & Electric – may pass the cost of the extra p...

Outsource California school reopening to Amazon: Joe Mathews

Many Californians say schools need to re-open now. But no one has had the guts to open all schools, and all grades, and send all kids back to class. That’s why our entire conversation about school reopening is beside the point. So-called grownups talk about when, or under what conditions, we might reopen. But we haven’t answered the question of who—amidst all the fear and politics—will actual pry open the schoolhouse door for every California child. It won’t be the federal government; President ...

Quick Recap- Wings/Panthers

How about a goal from Patrik Nemeth?  How about a goal from Mathias Brome?  Here at the KK/A2Y Casino, we would have taken 500/1 odds of those two scoring tonight. Jonathan Bernier was great Danny DeKeyser was rusty but spotted well throughout the game. Florida really came on strong midway through the third period but coud not get the equalizer, Detroit wins 2-1. Detroit goals and a questionable hit on Zadina by Gudas are below. Brandon Morrow optimistic about comeback with Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs released Brandon Morrow on June 30, 2020. As baseball transactions go, this one was easy to miss. The season was on hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Morrow had not thrown a pitch in a competitive game since July 2018, sidelined by a cavalcade of injuries that threatened to derail his career. Morrow’s next move was to get baseball off his brain. He and his family left their home in Scottsdale, away from the heat and into the mountains, so the 36-year-old pitcher could “pr...
