All Day Long

As today was a glorious warm spring day one like we haven’t seen in while I packed the stroller with what we might need to spend the entire day outside. As you probably know when you are with a baby be it with a stroller, a car, or on a plane it seems like everything in the house tags along: A change of clothes, diapers, diaper wipes, water, food, toys, a blanket, hand sanitizer... the stroller was loaded and I was glad it could support the load. We went to Luxembourg garden a few miles from ...

Animals add fun, comfort to Southern California online lessons

For many Southern California families, students and teachers taking part in distance learning during the coronavirus pandemic, animals offer solace — and a much-needed laugh — in tough times. From beloved household pets to wild animals, they’re providing comfort and a chance to see, and even learn, something new for those behind the computer screen. Mr. Green Bean the Veiled Chameleon is the class pet of one of the students of Erika Taylor-Ruffin, a sixth-grade teacher at Apple Valley County...

Sheldon Keefe Post Game, Leafs 6 vs. Oilers 1: “To get three strong performances from three different goaltenders says a lot about our goaltending depth and a lot about how the team competed, defended, and limited chances”

Lakers’ Frank Vogel explains decision to rest LeBron; bring Montrezl Harrell off bench

“I’m not looking for a handout,” LeBron James said just over a week ago. In an effort to make sure the Lakers’ biggest star is healthy, the hardest person to convince the 36-year-old should rest might just be James himself. But finally, with the All-Star break looming, many of the top rotation players out and a road back-to-back against a team well behind in the standings, James and the Lakers surrendered. After the Lakers lost 114-104 to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night, the decision was quick...

Dodgers prospect Landon Knack surrenders game-tying HR

PITCHING REPORT: Neither Julio Urias nor Corey Knebel could record three outs in their innings against the Reds. Urias threw 27 pitches in the first, retiring two batters but giving up a run on a single, a walk and an RBI double sliced inside the right-field line. The inning was ended ...

Dodgers’ World Series win brought Julio Urias and family joy – and some pain

GLENDALE, Ariz. — For 32 years, Dodgers fans waited for a championship moment to replace the oft-repeated highlight of Kirk Gibson’s home run in 1988. They finally got it last October when Julio Urias struck out Willy Adames to end Game 6 of the World Series and make the Dodgers champions again. “I’ve seen it a lot,” Urias said through an interpreter Wednesday of that final pitch and his triumphant reaction. “You see it on all these videos and it’s a very fond memory. It’s something that brings ...

Gov. Newsom says he and MLB in ‘advanced talks’ about letting fans attend games this season

Gov. Gavin Newsom is in “advanced talks” with Major League Baseball about allowing some fans to attend games this season, bolstering the cautious optimism among some that the Dodgers and Angels could at least partially fill their stadiums this summer after entertaining cardboard cutouts last year. Newsom made that comment during a visit to a Cal State Long Beach vaccination site Wednesday, March 3, less than a week after spring training games began. The regular season begins April 1. The coronav...

If Kings are buyers at the NHL trade deadline, who might they target?

With the Kings clawing into the thick of the playoff race as the season approaches its halfway mark, they might find themselves in the role of buyer rather than seller as the April 12 trade deadline draws near. A recent report from TSN’s Darren Dreger said that the Kings, who have been cautious with salary cap space and assets, might be pursuing a big acquisition. “(General Manager) Rob Blake of the Los Angeles Kings is another one looking for a defenseman … 25 and under,” Dreger said. “But he s...

2 new measures aim to take diesel trucks off Southern California roads

Two sweeping air pollution regulations aimed at removing smog-causing diesel trucks from Southern California roadways and warehouses are being released for public review within the next 30 days. The measures are part of an executive order issued by Gov. Gavin Newsom to have only zero-emission trucks and buses — most would be electric — on the roads by 2045. The changeover would impact 2 million medium- and heavy-duty trucks operating in California, including about 500,000 in Southern California....

Clippers have work to do in Washington, even short-handed

The Clippers likely won’t be at full strength on Thursday when they take the court for the final time before the All-Star break, desperate for a victory in what Paul George described as a “must-win” game against the Washington Wizards. He arrived at that assessment Tuesday night after the undermanned Clippers stalled down the stretch for the second consecutive game, losing this time to Boston, 117-112. The defeat was L.A.’s second consecutive loss and fifth in eight games. They were without All-...

Inside the Dodgers: Explaining the paradox of Corey Seager’s 2020 success

Editor’s note: This is the Wednesday, March 3 edition of the Inside the Dodgers newsletter from reporter J.P. Hoornstra. To receive the newsletter in your inbox, sign up here. One curiosity of the 2020 season stuck to my brain and didn’t let go throughout the off-season. Prior to the pandemic, Corey Seager famously watched video of his plate appearances during games. MLB banned the practice last year, among many restrictions designed to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus. In theory, th...

Hawthorne-based SpaceX’s latest Starship prototype lands upright, but then explodes

By MARCIA DUNN | The Associated Press Hawthorne-based SpaceX’s futuristic Starship looked like it aced a touchdown Wednesday, but then exploded on the landing pad with so much force that it was hurled into the air. The failure occurred just minutes after SpaceX declared success. Two previous test flights crash-landed in fireballs. The full-scale prototype of Elon Musk’s envisioned Mars ship soared more than 6 miles after lifting off from the southern tip of Texas on Wednesday. It descended horiz...

As The Trade Deadline Approaches Plus Observations

from Michael Traikos of the National Post, - A year ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning were in a similar position to where Toronto is now. They were cruising along as one of the best teams in the league. But they still went big at the deadline, giving up a pair of first-round draft picks for Blake Coleman and Barclay Goodrow, then beefed up their blue line with the additions of Zach Bogosian and Luke Schenn. None of those players was among Tampa’s top five in playoff scoring or in its top 1...
