Angels’ bullpen remains a work in progress

ANAHEIM — Six weeks of spring training in Arizona wasn’t enough to get the Angels’ bullpen in order for the regular season. They continued to tinker after coming home to start the Freeway Series against the Dodgers at Angel Stadium on Sunday night, working on re-acquiring relief pitcher Noe Ramirez after announcing they optioned relief pitcher Ty Buttrey to Triple-A. Ramirez, one of two players the Angels traded to Cincinnati for closer Raisel Iglesias in December, was released by the Reds early...

Kings look ahead to two-game series with Golden Knights

With two disappointing losses and four days without a game in their rearview mirror, the Kings hope to springboard off a rigorous practice Saturday and some special teams work Sunday as they face the Vegas Golden Knights for a two-game series beginning Monday. While the Kings have been idle, the Arizona Coyotes have been anything but dormant, winning three straight games, including a 4-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks Saturday. San Jose beat the Kings in their previous two games. Those develop...

UCLA advances to Elite Eight with victory over Alabama in overtime thriller

UCLA ‘s Jaime Jaquez Jr. secured a defensive rebound with a one-point lead and just four seconds left in regulation. Jaquez quickly fired the ball to David Singleton knowing Alabama was going to foul. Singleton knocked down both free throws to increase the Bruins’ lead to three, the largest separation the two teams had seen from each other for eight minutes. It felt like enough. UCLA’s berth to the Elite Eight seemed imminent, but Alabama’s Alex Reese drained a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to pu...

The Wings “Competed Exceedingly Hard”

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News, For these past two days it’s been difficult to distinguish which team was chasing a playoff berth and the one in last place. The Red Wings are the team in the Central Division cellar but didn’t look like it against Columbus, which looked lethargic. And the Wings took advantage both days, Sunday completing a two-game weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory Sunday. Coming off a poor performance Thursday in Nashville, one of the uglier losses of the ...

Ducks’ Rickard Rakell suffers apparent head injury in open-ice collision

Coach Dallas Eakins couldn’t say how seriously left wing Rickard Rakell was injured after a neutral zone collision with Kyle Clifford of the St. Louis Blues in the second period Sunday at Enterprise Center. Eakins did say he saw Rakell up and about in the dressing room after the game. Rakell’s status was uncertain for the Ducks’ game Monday against the Colorado Avalanche in Denver, the final game on their five-game trip. He appeared to strike the back of his head on the ice after Clifford, skati...

Volunteers and nonprofits step in to help non-English speakers get COVID-19 vaccines

When a vaccine first became available, Jung Koo Kang, 78, a Korean immigrant who doesn’t speak English, started receiving brochures about registering online. All the materials he received were in English. Kang couldn’t find any assistance when he tried to register. Calling on the phone didn’t help, either. “At the beginning, I got a lot of fliers and pamphlets in the mail about vaccination but all of them were in English and it created a lot of confusion for me,” said Kang through a translator. ...

Modular housing could be an answer to the housing crisis

Two years ago, CalMatters housing writer Matt Levin described a factory in Vallejo that was building housing modules that could quickly — and relatively inexpensively — be assembled into multi-story apartment houses. Levin described the factory as more resembling an automobile assembly line than a construction site. “They build one floor approximately every two and a half hours,” Larry Pace, co-founder of Factory OS, told Levin. “It’s fast.” Modular construction offers a potential solution to on...

America must remain vigilant about China’s global ambitions

Let’s not ignore the red flags: China wants to rule the world. Cyberattacks, aggressive naval movements in the South China Sea, and destabilizing nearby nations — the Chinese government has been keener than ever to replace the United States as the most superior force on the face of the Earth. Right before U.S. officials met with the Chinese envoys in Alaska last week, a hacking group linked to the Chinese government attacked thousands of businesses, government offices, and schools in the U.S. vi...
