Clippers fighting through injuries

LOS ANGELES — To fit in a 72-game schedule, the NBA has been running a fastbreak of sorts since the season began in late December. In a regular season reduced by 10 games, the Clippers are scheduled to play 13 back-to-back sets overall, which, if you’re keeping track at home, is the same as last season, one fewer than in 2017-18 and five fewer than 2016-17. What’s more, days between games are few, too, this go-around. Not counting the All-Star break, entering Thursday’s game against Denver – the...

Alexander: Opening Day for the Dodgers was less celebration, more consternation

We shouldn’t have had to be reminded that this isn’t going to be easy for the Dodgers. All of that “best team in baseball” talk? The suggestions that the defending champs might be the 21st century equivalent of the ’27 Yankees? That’s basically shaking a finger at fate and daring it to respond. Which it did Thursday afternoon. A wise retired college baseball coach of my acquaintance likes to put it this way: “The game doesn’t care.” It doesn’t care what you did last year, or what you’re projecte...

Father, Grandfather, Prom King; shooting victim’s daughter says he “was everything”

When Luis Tovar died in a mass shooting Wednesday, March 31, his children and grandchildren lost “the backbone of our entire family,” said daughter Vania Tovar. “Our world is shattered,” she said Thursday. Luis Tovar, 50, left behind five children and six grandchildren — and a reputation for kindness, humor and strength. “My dad was the most amazing dad and grandfather,” Vania Tovar, 28, said. “He supported every single one of us in a time of need.” Authorities on Thursday confirmed that one man...

Unified Homes, the site of a mass shooting in Orange, known for efficient, friendly service

The Facebook video shows a happier day at Unified Homes. A family gathered in the unfurnished dining room of their new mobile home, standing under a red “Congratulations” banner, champagne glasses in hand. An unnamed sales agent explains in Spanish that this is the day the family received their new property. “Congratulations, blessings and enjoy your new home,” the agent says. On Thursday, however, shock spread through some of Orange County’s mobile home parks as word spread that Unified Homes –...

During this increasingly unnerving era, talking to kids about tragedies is even more essential

Chicago, Atlanta, Boulder. Mass shootings in cities throughout the country over the past three weeks are disturbing enough. But when an incident occurs closer to home — as it did this week in Orange County, where a gunman is accused of shooting and killing four people, including a 9-year-old boy — parents locally may be wrestling with how to talk to their children about such traumatic events. While there’s no one way to approach it, experts generally are encouraging parents to have honest conver...

Quick Recap- Detroit Red Wings/Florida Panthers

If the Wings could play like they did tonight, they would be known as a team that comes to compete every night. Hopefully they realize it and understand this type of effort should become the norm and not something that happens every 4-5 games. Florida Panthers win 3-2 in OT but the Wings should be happy with their effort. Detroit goals are below. Team Stats Continue reading "Quick Recap- Detroit Red Wings/Florida Panthers"

Albert Pujols equals record by being in Angels’ Opening Day lineup

ANAHEIM — Although 41-year-old Albert Pujols certainly won’t be the Angels’ everyday first baseman this season, and he might not even play the majority of the games, Manager Joe Maddon felt he had earned the right to play the first one. Maddon put Pujols in Thursday’s lineup at first, which made 21 consecutive Opening Day starts for Pujols. He is the third player in history to start on Opening Day in each of his first 21 seasons, joining Pete Rose and Eddie Murray. “Transparently, part of it was...

Trophy Prep Today

Went and got Steve his birthday present, his 2021 Fishing Licence. Then I got to work vacuuming out the boat. Steve got stuff out of the way and by the time I was done with the near side, it was ready to be pulled out so we did that. I finished up at about 6:45PM. I didn't bring any fishing equipment with me and was driving the Expedition so I just ran by Bulldog and the GOMH to see if anyone was fishing. No one was. By the time mom and dad got home, it was getting dark and I wasn't intereste...

Depleted Lakers reeling as schedule gets tougher

Somehow, the Lakers’ resident tough guy is also their resident optimist. Markieff Morris didn’t let a smile drop for his entire press conference on Wednesday night despite all available evidence that the Lakers (30-18) are in a low ebb. Their hold on fourth place in the Western Conference slipped after the loss to Milwaukee, and the anticipated debut of center Andre Drummond was stamped out when Brook Lopez landed on his toe.  But Morris, one of the returning title winners with a gruff, Philly-b...

Victim’s daughter: Bystander disrupted attack on NY street

By Michael R. Sisak | Associated Press NEW YORK — The daughter of an Asian American woman attacked in New York City said Thursday that a person not seen on surveillance video helped the woman by screaming to distract her assailant while others watched and did nothing to intervene. Elizabeth Kari, writing on a fundraising webpage she set up for her mother’s care, said the bystander was across the street when a man accosted her 65-year-old mother Vilma Kari, kicked her in the stomach, knocked her...

Vaccine eligibility widens in LA County despite limited doses

As another million people in Los Angeles County on Thursday, April 1, were able to get in line for often scarce coronavirus vaccine appointments, public health officials urged residents to be patient and avoid gathering and follow pandemic safety rules as they wait to be inoculated. Residents age 50 and older are now eligible for the shots, but at least 631,000 residents in that age group have already received at least one vaccine dose, officials have said, by qualifying in another eligible cate...

Why the lone remaining Big Bear bald eagle egg is unlikely to hatch

The last of five bald eagle eggs laid in a nest watched by a web cam above Big Bear Lake this winter will likely never hatch, experts say. The first three eggs were laid and lost in January, but hopes rode high as a second pair of eggs were laid in February. The eaglet from first egg of the second clutch died as it was hatching, leaving one egg. Unfortunately, as of Thursday, April 1, it has been 48 days since parents Jackie and Shadow started to incubate the eggs. Typically, eggs hatch 35 to 38...
