Kentavious Caldwell-Pope shakes off bumpy start, finds perfect fit with Lakers

PHILADELPHIA — It was meant to be a putback. An easy shot. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope threw the ball back up toward the rim almost as quickly as he collected the rebound. Then, his heart sank as the ball stuck between the rim and the backboard – an unlikely result that added to his run of misfortune whenever he tried to do something that’s come naturally for so much of his life: score. This was not the plan. Feeling a special season ahead, Caldwell-Pope devoted more time than ever this offseason t...

Travel: Downtown Miami comes alive for Super Bowl LIV

Born and raised in Miami, Lorrie-Ann Diaz remembers when the downtown was a “wasteland, for many, many years, just empty lots.” “Brickell was like Gotham City — that’s what I called it,” Diaz said of the urban neighborhood of downtown Miami that is now its glittering skyscraper-laden financial center. At a recent Miami Heat game, Diaz, who is the NBA team’s vice president of business communications and social responsibility, shared the transformation of downtown Miami around AmericanAirlines Are...

MB CUSTOM RODS - Coffee Time in the Workshop

Social media is always a great way to keep up with custom fly rod builders and the ability to follow along with hashtags, like #glassisnotdead (over 59,000 images and counting), on Instagram pops a lot of things onto my feed that I might otherwise miss.  One of the recent fly rod builds from Marc Beissler of MB Custom Rods came across my Facebook timeline this week and I like it a lot.  I felt that his work was worth sharing to the T.F.M. masses. Marc wrote...  "The blank is one of Cortney's Bl...

ST. LOUIS — Annie Pankowski got an email from the NHL asking if she’d like to be a part of its All-Star Weekend and jumped at the opportunity. Then she found out she wouldn’t be alone. Tkachuk Brothers Share First All-Star Game in Their Hometown

ST. LOUIS — Brady Tkachuk didn’t mind cutting his vacation to the Bahamas short. Bruins Should Play Pastrnak With Krejci

Despite once again playing with a revolving door of wingers and starting the 2019-20 campaign slowly, David Krejci isn’t having a bad season. Recording just one assist in his first five games on the year, Krejci and the Bruins second line have been drawing the ire of the Bruins faithful all season long. Outside of that start and one stretch of play between Dec. 5 and Dec. 12 that saw Krejci held pointless in five games, however, the 33-year-old center has actually been very consistent on t...

Whicker: Life on golf’s fringes – ‘Every day is a grind.’

SAN DIEGO — On Saturday, Willie Mack and Kamaiu Johnson and the rest of the Advocates Pro Golf Association Tour will play on Torrey Pines’ North Course. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy & Co. will play on Torrey Pines South. Some holes will separate them by just a few yards. That’s tantalizing and maybe a little cruel, considering their worlds are, well, worlds apart. “The last sponsor I had was five years ago,” Mack said. “I’ve been doing OK lately. But if I break even for the year, that’s good.” Mack...

Tiger Woods stumbles early, is 6 strokes back after 36 holes at Farmers Insurance Open

SAN DIEGO — Tiger Woods added some points to his frequent-putter program on the first hole at Torrey Pines South. He four-putted the first green for a double-bogey 6, then played the next 17 holes at 3-under-par on Friday. It left the seven-time Farmers Insurance Open champ at 4-under after 36 holes, and six strokes behind leader Ryan Palmer. Woods also made a six on that hole three times in the 2008 U.S. Open, which didn’t keep him from winning in a playoff. A comeback victory Sunday would give...

Ovechkin’s All-Star Decision and the Logic Behind It

For a player like Alex Ovechkin, the NHL All-Star Game does not have the same appeal as it might to others. Ovechkin has reached the pinnacle of hockey, winning the 2018 Stanley Cup, entering the top-10 in goals scored in NHL history and scoring 50 goals eight times in his career. For him, the focus is on the playoffs and making sure his body is in a good place come mid-April. Without him at 100%, it would be a detriment to the Washington Capitals on their quest to hoist another Stanley Cup. ...

California’s economic power may surprise you

California’s economy is bullish. In fact, it’s huge on a global scale. But its parts, the county-by-county economies that make up the Golden State’s business muscle, are quite large, too.
