UCLA finds link between poor air quality, COVID vulnerability

LOS ANGELES — Long-term exposure to poor air quality increased the risk of COVID-19 throughout the country last year, according to a UCLA-led research team. The researchers found that the use of preventative measures — like stay-at-home orders and masking — reduced the risk of COVID-19 by 8% and 15%, respectively, but did not reduce the increase of incidence in counties with historically poor air quality. “This is evidence that long-term exposure to poor air quality increased the risk of COVID-1...

Mapped: How California home price jumped $26 every hour

Just how crazy is California’s homebuying market? Well, my trusty spreadsheet’s analysis of California Association of Realtors’ sales data for May shows the median selling price of an existing single-family home at $818,260 median, up $230,190 in a year. That translates to an increase equal to $26.28 every hour over the past 12 months. Cheap mortgage rates have fueled the buying frenzy out of a pandemic-chilled economy. Last month’s statewide homebuying pace was up 87% from May 2020’s depressed...

COVID-19 lockdowns brought fast global ozone reductions, say JPL scientists

As a result of the lower NOx emissions, by June 2020, global ozone levels had dropped to a level that policymakers thought would take at least 15 years to reach by...

Luring steelhead trout from ocean to O.C. waterways

After nearly two decades of efforts, the endangered steelhead trout appear on the verge of returning to Orange County streams and rivers. The oceangoing fish return to freshwater to spawn as part of a dramatic and almost magical cycle, in which their offspring are often rainbow trout. Twenty percent or less of those rainbow trout then seek ocean water downstream and transform into the larger, silvery steelheads as they adapt to the saltwater. But Southern California’s steelheads are endangered, ...
