Investment in Southern California’s industrial properties is booming

Southern California is the nation’s top target for foreign investment in industrial properties. That’s the upshot of a new report from CBRE Research and Real Capital Analytics which shows foreign investment in the greater Los Angeles/Orange County/Inland Empire region nearly tripled year-over-year in 2018, hitting $910 million. That accounted for 6.3 percent of all foreign capital flowing into U.S. warehouses, logistics facilities and fulfillment centers last year — the most in any one region. S...

Nuclear energy and the Green New Deal

The Green New Deal’s goal is to move America to zero carbon emissions in 10 years. “That’s a goal you could only imagine possible if you have no idea how energy is produced,” James Meigs, former editor of Popular Mechanics magazine, says in my latest video. “Renewable is so inconsistent,” he adds. “You can’t just put in wind turbines and solar panels. You have to build all this infrastructure to connect them with energy consumers.” Because wind doesn’t always blow and the sun doesn’t always shin...

LA’s San Fernando Valley Neighborhood Councils are having elections next week. But does anybody care?

Elections for most of the San Fernando Valley’s 34 neighborhood councils are set to begin next week, but many residents may not even be aware the local advisory bodies exist. Those community members are missing out, officials say, on an important opportunity to engage with city government. Certified in 2001, neighborhood council boards are comprised of elected volunteers that make recommendations to Los Angeles City Hall on local issues ranging from land use and development to traffic and road m...

California wineries suffer under misguided trade war

Mostly, a quick look around the room will tell you, it’s Americans who buy stuff from China rather than the reverse. But there are some American things that the growing new consumer class of our giant geopolitical frenemy covets. And most of those things, as it happens, are California products. Teslas, for instance — just as in Palo Alto or Pasadena, Elon Musk’s fancy electric cars are the vehicle of choice for highly affluent Shanghai yuppies. Then there are simpler tastes for a more affordable...

Reader has an idea on how to fix the 241 toll road’s congestion at the 91

Q. Dear Honk: The northbound 241 Toll Road as it approaches the 91 Freeway is very dangerous during rush-hour traffic. At these times, traffic is often backed up for two or more miles in the right two lanes that go onto the eastbound 91. To avoid waiting in this backup, many cars try to cut into these right lanes from the free-flowing left lanes that go onto the westbound 91. Countless cars literally stop in these left lanes trying to merge into the right ones at the last second. This is obvious...

Nordic Nation: The Proudly Alaskan Episode with Reese Hanneman

He is proudly Alaskan and has resisted the temptation over the years to migrate elsewhere. We are talking about twenty-nine-year-old Reese Hanneman who has in fact migrated from his hometown of Fairbanks to the more southern maritime climate of Anchorage, Alaska. College kids are living like kings in Vancouver’s empty mansions

Isaiah Boodhoo, 22, thought it was a “complete hoax” when he saw a rental listing on Facebook for a bedroom in a Vancouver mansion for only $825 a month (or $1,100 Canadian). It turned out the glass chandeliers, luxurious blue drapes, steam room and billiards table were for real. The nine-bedroom home, dubbed “The Castle” by the 14 students who share the property, is apparently owned by an Afghani pop artist, according to Boodhoo. “Honestly, I would stay here for as long as I could,” he said, si...

The ‘incredibly rare’ way these adoptive parents in Pasadena found their daughter’s bio-sister

By Joshua Rosen Contributor Five years ago, a Pasadena family adopted their daughter from China. Last year they discovered she has a sister. Now they’re desperately trying to bring her home too. When Sidney Pogatchnik and her husband adopted Ellie, now 7, from Lanzhou, China in 2014, nobody knew that she had a biological sister — not even the orphanage. “I think it’s crazy, I still do! I’m kind of getting used to it now, but even when I just stop for a minute and think about it …,” Pogatchnik tr...
