Elaine Thompson-Herah leads Jamaican sweep in 100 meters with Olympic record

TOKYO >> Bob Marley and the Wailers bounced through an all but empty Olympic Stadium late Saturday night, a familiar song serenading a familiar sight. We’re jammin’ To think that jammin’ was a thing of the past We’re jammin’ And I hope this jam is gonna last As the song played, Elaine Thompson-Herah lingered just past the finish line wrapped in a Jamaican flag, the same flag that has been draped all over the Olympic Games’ women’s 100 meters now for parts of three decades. Disneyland ‘Blinkin’ Lincoln’ animatronic used to go crazy and smash his chair in a robotic fit

The Great Emancipator who has starred as an audio-animatronic historic figure in Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln for a half century at Disneyland got off to a rough start in 1964 when he would go crazy from power surges and smash his chair in a robotic fit. “Mr. Lincoln would sit in this chair and he would start to get up and all of a sudden he would go into this robotic fit and fling his arms around,” Disney historian Bill Cotter said in a new Disney+ show. “He literally smashed his chair into k...

Contenders, Hopefuls And Rebuilders

from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe, Where the league stands after the dust settled (tiers in alphabetical order): Contenders Boston — Lots of depth up front. Still not sure if they’re better, given Krejci loss. Carolina — Made up for the Alex Nedeljkovic loss by adding Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta. If they’re healthy, that’s a strong tandem. Replaced Dougie Hamilton with Tony DeAngelo, yet another reminder that hockey is a business, no matter how hard a team’s PR staff...

Florida governor blocks school mask mandates

By Rich McKay | Reuters Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued an executive order on Friday blocking mask mandates in the state’s schools, saying parents had the right to decide if their children would wear face coverings. The move by DeSantis, a Republican who has opposed strict COVID-19 rules on residents and businesses, overrules a requirement by two Florida counties, Broward and Gadsen, that students cover their faces when they return to class next month. “In Florida, there will be no lockdown...

What explains the California exodus?

Walt Disney Co. recently announced that 2,000 workers in California will be relocated to Florida. Many of these workers are part of Disney’s innovative “Imagineers,” a Disney unit often credited with creating the “magic” in the Magic Kingdom. In a letter to employees, the chairman of Disney Parks, Josh D’Amaro, cited Florida’s “business-friendly climate and its lower cost of living with no income tax” as reasons for the move. Disney’s announced move of some of its most talented and creative work...

Man United’s meeting with Preston called off following Covid outbreak in Solskjaer’s squad

Manchester United have today become the latest Premier League club to see their plans for the new campaign thrown off track by an outbreak of Covid-19. Covid chaos Pre-season preparations across the English top-flight, to date, have of course proven something of a mess. The chief reason for this, inevitably, has been Covid-19.First, last week, it was confirmed that Arsenal’s London Colney training ground had been hit by an outbreak, forcing the club into a shutdown to allow for a deep clean. The ...

Is The Goaltending In Toronto Good Enough To Win The Cup?

from Michael Traikos of the National Post, While the Tampa Bay Lightning won back-to-back championships with four-time Vezina Trophy finalist Andrei Vasilevskiy as their unquestioned starter, the line between elite No. 1 goalie and flavour-of-the-month has never been so blurred — or so confusing. Maybe that is why so many teams are now treating the position as though it is the NHL’s version of a bullpen. It’s all about quantity — not quality — these days, with teams preferring tandems...

Analysis: Lakers face tricky choice of priorities at No. 22 in NBA Draft

For many franchises, the NBA Draft is a wellspring of hope, the possibility that lean years might turn around and they might uncover the star who changes their fortunes. That’s no longer true for the Lakers, who already have the stars they need to win and have indeed already won with them. So what does a shot at the future represent to a team that keeps pushing its chips to the present? Thursday will bring an answer to how the Lakers’ front office values a draft pick: as a young player who can h...

In advance of NBA Draft, Lakers’ ties to Klutch could be a bond to watch

The reach of Klutch Sports now extends to more than half of the rosters in the NBA, and much of that clientele was on hand earlier this month as the agency carried out a nationally televised pro day at Sierra Canyon High School. There was Anthony Edwards (Minnesota), Miles Bridges (Charlotte), Jordan Clarkson (Utah), Lonnie Walker (San Antonio), Tyrese Maxey (Philadelphia) and Lonzo Ball (New Orleans). But when it comes to Klutch, it’s impossible to fully wipe away the evident bonds: Montrezl Ha...

California ranked as No. 3 state for innovation, surveys say

U.S. women win 1st Olympic gold in 3×3 basketball

TOKYO >> Every game of three-on-three basketball, which made its debut this summer as an Olympic sport, began the same way: a countdown from 10 over the arena speakers that finished “five … four … THREE … X … THREE!” Kelsey Plum, a member of the U.S. women’s team, described the scene as “pandemonium, like you’re shot out of a cannon.” Time will tell whether three-on-three — or 3×3, as it is officially known here — catches fire as an Olympic sport, but the five-day run of games at the Aomi sports...

Politicians never learn the harm of their endless rules

Politicians just don’t learn. People die as police fight drug dealers. Marijuana dealers form gangs and fight among themselves. It’s so stupid. Especially because marijuana is relatively harmless. Finally, some states legalized it, hoping to put an end to the black market. But legalization hasn’t ended the violence. Why? Because many states impose so many unnecessary rules. California is one of the worst. “The illicit market is approximately two to three times the size of the legal market,” says...

FBI got inside a KKK group plotting a murder in 2015

By Jason Dearen | Associated Press PALATKA, Fla. — Joseph Moore breathed heavily, his face slick with nervous sweat. He held a cellphone with a photo of a man splayed on the floor; the man appeared dead, his shirt torn apart and his pants wet. Puffy dark clouds blocked the sun as Moore greeted another man, who’d pulled up in a metallic blue sedan. They met behind an old fried chicken shack in rural north Florida. “KIGY, my brother,” Moore said. It was shorthand for “Klansman, I greet you.” Birds...
