Emmy Awards show could go off the rails — and make for fun TV

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, Sunday’s socially distanced Emmy Awards telecast won’t look anything like it usually does. And that could be a good thing. Late-night funny guy Jimmy Kimmel will host the event from Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles, but there will be no audience or traditional red-carpet festivities. Instead, nominees will be stationed in their homes (or other locales) with special camera-and-mic rigs. Organizers say they will be able to tap into live feeds from 130 loca...

Emmy Awards 2020: Predictions for what could be a very awkward show

Considering that the Emmy Awards will go virtual for the first time — and that winners will accept their prizes from their homes — maybe our annual batch of predictions should focus more on how the telecast will unfold, than who will prevail. For example: Just how many awkward flubs are going to plague host Jimmy Kimmel? Will the WiFi cut out, and if so, when? Who will have the best Zoom backgrounds? Fall TV calendar: Premiere dates and times for a season in flux

Thanks to the global pandemic, this year’s fall TV season will look like no other. Production on new and returning scripted broadcast content had to be delayed, so most shows will be arriving later than usual. And some (ie: “Survivor”) won’t even air in the fall. Meanwhile, as of this writing, premiere dates for many shows had yet to be announced. That makes it more important than ever for TV fans to keep an eye on the schedule. As changes are made, we’ll continue to input them into this post. S...

What is Proposition 16? Affirmative action back on the ballot, in a more diverse and Democratic California

The fall campaign to repeal California’s ban on affirmative action is a testament to the tectonic shift in the state’s politics since the 1990s — and a test of how far left its voters have swung from their politically purple past. Twenty-four years ago, Republican Gov. Pete Wilson led the successful push for Proposition 209, which prohibited any consideration of race in public college admissions and other government functions, such as hiring and contracting. This year, though, the full weight of...

How Fantasy Springs Resort Casino helped make an action movie during the coronavirus

When director Christian Sesma and producer Mike Hatton started working on their Coachella Valley-centric film “Pay Dirt,” Fantasy Springs Resort Casino turned out to be the perfect to play the film’s casino — so good that Sesma said he and Hatton would be back. The director and producer doubled down on the Indio area resort with their new film “Take Back,” but this time the casino went from a starring role to a big location behind-the-scenes. Fantasy Springs housed the cast and crew and hosted p...

Is Harry Potter telling the future for the theme park business?

If you want to understand what’s happening in the theme park industry right now, just look back a decade or so. In 2009, attendance was tanking at the Universal Orlando Resort — down more than 10 percent over the year before, according to the Themed Entertainment Association/AECOM Theme Index report. The economy was just beginning to recover from the Great Recession, but other parks were seeing modest increases that year, including big gains at Disneyland. August Update - Finally With Fishing Too!!!

I posted some of this over the weekend on Facebook. So if we're friends there, you've already seen it. I won't be offended if you leave now. That being said...I didn't do a follow up post from our mini family getaway to north Georgia the other week. By 2020 standards, it was amazing. For the most part we just continued to social distance, simply in a new location. The biggest change, besides the potential for an evening bear visit to our trash can, was much cooler temperatures. 80s during the da...

/Film has been following the phenomenon of Cobra Kai since it premiered on YouTube Premium in 2018. Now, there’s a whole new generation of karate kids, some under the misguided leadership of Johnny’s Cobra Kai dojo, and a few under Daniel’s Miyagi-Do. Netflix has acquired the phenomenon of Cobra Kai. As fans waited for news on when...

Why AARP produced a documentary about 33-year-old comedian Jesus Trejo

Long Beach-born comedian Jesus Trejo likes to joke about his two “kids” on stage — except his are a little different than most. “I got two kids, ages 70 and 71,” he jokes during his set that’s part of a scene in the new documentary “Care to Laugh.” The film follows Trejo as he’s trying to make a name for himself as a comic while being the primary caretaker for his elderly parents, who both suffer from serious medical issues. “They followed my family and I for a year as I pursued stand-up and too...

Why it’s a good idea Felipe Esparza created two new Netflix specials in English and Spanish

Last year, while comedian Felipe Esparza was performing a set in Spanish at Sevilla Nightclub in Long Beach, he took note of a particularly enthusiastic group in the audience that included a man in his 40s who was there with his father. After the show, Esparza said he ran into the father and son as they were getting into their car. “I said to him, ‘Hey, where are you going?’ and he said back, ‘Oh, we’re going home to watch your special in English, because my dad liked it in Spanish,’” Esparza re...

First Look: ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 3 Footage; New Season Hits Netflix Next Year

Like Karate Kid franchise protagonist Daniel LaRusso, the sequel series Cobra Kai has proven to be something of an underdog success story.
