Trump’s impeachment trial could begin on Inauguration Day

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial could begin on Inauguration Day, just as Democrat Joe Biden takes the oath of office in an ever-more-extraordinary end to the defeated president’s tenure in the White House. The timing is not set and depends heavily on when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decides to transmit the article of impeachment to the Senate. Democrats hoping to avoid interrupting Biden’s inauguration have suggested holding back until the new president has a chance to get...

Yang kicks off candidacy for New York City mayor

By Gregory Krieg and Rob Frehse | CNN Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang officially jumped into the crowded race to become the next mayor of New York City on Thursday morning. At a kick-off rally in Upper Manhattan, Yang promised to “revive” a city stricken by the coronavirus and introduced newly-elected Rep. Ritchie Torres as a co-chair on his campaign — a striking endorsement for a candidate with no experience in city politics. “I’m running for mayor for a very simple reason,...

Donald Trump stands largely silent, alone after second impeachment

By JONATHAN LEMIRE, JILL COLVIN and ZEKE MILLER | Associated Press WASHINGTON — His place in the history books rewritten, President Donald Trump endured his second impeachment largely alone and silent. For more than four years, Trump has dominated the national discourse like no one before him. Yet when his legacy was set in stone on Wednesday, he was stunningly left on the sidelines. Trump now stands with no equal, the only president to be charged twice with a high crime or misdemeanor, a new co...

Impeachment comes full circle for L.A. Rep. Adam Schiff

A year ago Wednesday, Rep. Adam Schiff was gearing up for the battle of his political life. President Donald Trump had just been impeached in the House, and Schiff was preparing for marathon arguments in the Senate chamber, where he would lead the case to convict the president and remove him from office. The rest is American history: Conviction failed — and a year like no other ensued: A pandemic killed hundreds of thousands in the U.S. The death of George Floyd set off  a massive social justice...

California says seniors 65 and over will get priority on coronavirus vaccine

Under new guidelines from the California Department of Public Health, people in Phase 1A of the state’s tiered system – health care workers and nursing home residents – are still eligible to receive vaccines. Democracy vs. unity? Local House members differ on why they support, or oppose, impeaching Trump

“Democracy.” Or, from those on the other side of the political aisle, “unity.” Those are the boil-it-down-to-a-word answers when local House members are asked why they favor or oppose impeaching short-timer President Donald Trump for his role in inciting insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The unprecedented violence that on Jan. 6 led to five deaths and drove House members of both parties into hiding is sparking the equally unprecedented second impeachment of Trump. But the ideological split that ...

Analysis: For Trump and the nation, a final test of accountability

From Trump to Torrance, Reps. Waters and Lieu cover lots of ground at State of the Region lunch

The subjects ran the gamut Tuesday, Feb. 19, at the State of the Region lunch sponsored by the Torrance Chamber of Commerce. But this year it was more about Trump than Torrance. That was to be expected with the event’s guest speakers this year, U.S. Reps. Maxine Waters and Ted Lieu, two President Trump’s most vocal critics, and the nation’s deeply divided political environment. United States Representative Maxine Waters speaking at the State of the Region lunch sponsored by the Torrance Area ...

The fight for free speech on college campuses

Last month, California Rep. Ted Lieu said, “I would love to be able to regulate the content of speech; the First Amendment prevents me from doing so.” This remarkable statement is just the latest in a string of attacks against free speech by California policymakers. Last year, the state legislature introduced a bill to regulate “fake news” on social media and ban books that counseled against gender reassignment surgery. In addition, its law requiring pregnancy centers to advertise abortion servi...

Trump’s withdrawal of troops from Syria the right call

On Wednesday, President Trump ordered the withdrawal of American troops from Syria. In doing so, he is pulling the United States from a conflict initiated by President Obama without so much as a vote of Congress. That’s the right call, as some of Trump’s more principled critics are even willing to admit. “I strongly agree with the President’s decision to withdraw US troops from Syria,” said Rep. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance. “Congress never authorized the US to go to war in Syria. While going after terr...
