There’s horror at the drive-in as Beyond Fest brings genre movie celebration to Montclair

Beyond Fest, which bills itself as the most-attended genre film festival in the nation, will take place as scheduled this year. Though instead of indoor cinemas, all of the movies will be screened at the Mission Tiki Drive-In in Montclair, organizers announced Friday. And really, given the mix of horror, suspense and similar fare, what better place to watch this mix of world or U.S. premieres and retrospectives of classically creepy films than the drive-in? “We covet the theatrical experience ab...

Eviction bans taking a bite out of landlords’ bottom line

Real estate agent Adam Bray-Ali hopes to retire someday off the income from his small portfolio of triplexes and four-plexes. But lately, his side job as a landlord isn’t going so well. Tenants in three of his 20 units stopped paying rent after the coronavirus pandemic hit in March. One tenant moved out owing $6,000. Now Bray-Ali is losing money on two of his five buildings, and he’s thinking about selling one of them. Thanks to forbearance, he’s been able to skip some mortgage payments and abou...

Experts say wildfire smoke can make people more susceptible to COVID-19

As wildfires continue burning across Southern California, medical experts are warning that smoke inhalation can weaken the immune system and make people more vulnerable to respiratory infections, including the novel coronavirus. The Centers for Disease Control says wildfire smoke can irritate the lungs, cause inflammation, and make a person more prone to lung infections, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Six months of pandemic photography in the Southern California

One day, this will all be over. Coronavirus will be gone and we’ll get back to normal. But what will we remember? For the past six months, almost every facet of our lives has changed – covered faces, empty shelves, remote learning and drive-thru everything. Our photographers have been working throughout this pandemic to tell the stories of the people of Southern California and record history for our posterity. For our photographers, it’s personal. Normally, when we cover a story we are uninvolve...

Trump and Biden hit unlikely battleground state of Minnesota

By WILL WEISSERT and KATHLEEN HENNESSEY | Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota has backed Democratic presidential candidates for nearly half a century and rarely receives much attention during the final stages of the race. This is when campaigns typically focus their resources on more traditional swing states like Florida or Pennsylvania. But Minnesota will feel like a genuine battleground on Friday as President Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, campaign here to mark the...

Firefighter dies battling El Dorado fire started by smoke bomb, authorities say

A firefighter has died while battling the El Dorado fire, a blaze that has rolled through 19,000-plus acres and was apparently started by a smoke bomb ignited during a gender-reveal photo shoot in Yucaipa, U.S. Forest Service announced Friday morning. The firefighter’s name was not immediately released, nor were details on how he died but authorities did say on Friday, Sept. 18, it happened on Thursday. “Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and fellow firefighters during this time...

Cop’s call as to whether you get cited for not having a front license plate

Q. I just got a fix-it ticket from the California Highway Patrol on the 73 for not having a front license plate. The front of my car, a 2013 Chrysler 300 SRT, did not have a mount for a front plate. Right after getting the ticket, I saw more than five vehicles without front license plates within a two-mile stretch. I went to my car dealership and it graciously put the plate on. I wasn’t looking forward to defacing my car’s front look. Everyone knows that thousands of cars in our area are driving...

Why are unemployment checks months late? State audit aims to find out

Out-of-work Southern Californians have been waiting months for unemployment checks to arrive as the coronavirus pandemic rages and employed residents have mistakenly received piles of payments for which they didn’t ask. Now fed-up lawmakers have demanded an emergency audit of the state agency that handles those claims, the Employment Development Department. The respective chair and vice chair of California’s Joint Legislative Audit Committee, Assemblyman Rudy Salas, D-Bakersfield; and state Sen....

Coronavirus testing kiosk at Union Station foretells future of pandemic recovery

Andrew Raposa stood in line outside Union Station in Los Angeles on a recent Wednesday with a handful of friends waiting to be tested for the coronavirus at a unique walk-up kiosk. Unlike most of the testing sites throughout the county, this one operated by Curative in partnership with the city and county, did not require a car and it was located in a heavily trafficked area. That’s one of the reasons Raposa said he chose the spot as he lives in downtown L.A. and doesn’t own a car. People ta...

Coming Sunday: Early look at new Lakers book

Longtime Lakers fans understand this is hardly the first season with some serious drama. The team’s 16 NBA titles rarely came easily. Author Jeff Pearlman’s new book, “Three Ring Circus,” dives into the post-Showtime Lakers when they pulled together high schooler Kobe Bryant, dominant center Shaquille O’Neal and Phil Jackson, a coach whose resume already was worthy of the Hall of Fame. As the Lakers try to reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 2010, Southern California News Group readers...

The real story of how the violent, drug-fueled ‘Goodfellas’ became a gangster classic

Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” is not just an iconic gangster movie; it’s an all-time classic and a pop-culture touchstone that’s packed with one memorable scene after another, whether it’s that minutes-long shot tracking Ray Liotta’s Henry Hill and Lorraine Bracco’s Karen Hill through the bowels of the Copacabana club or Joe Pesci’s terrifying Tommy DeVito asking ominously if Henry thinks he’s “funny like a clown.” It’s also a film that Glenn Kenny, a veteran film journalist, has re-watched reg...

Why are the lowest mortgage rates so hard to capture?

Real deal or just a mirage? So simple it would seem. Every online mortgage ad you read, listen to on the radio or see on television makes your heart go pitter-patter just a bit more than the last super-low-rate stored into your memory bank. But why are things so wildly different from lender to lender when it comes to something so simple as loan program availability? And, what about those mandates and restrictions when your lender says it has what you want? Are your credit scores high enough? Did...

39% of California workforce has filed for jobless claims since March

Unemployment claims in California fell last week compared with the previous week, a welcome respite for the state, which has seen 8.6 million workers file jobless claims since coronavirus-linked business shutdowns began six months ago. An estimated 230,200 California workers filed first-time claims for jobless benefits during the week ending Sept. 12, down 13,200 from the 243,400 who filed claims in the week ending Sept. 5, the U.S. Labor Department reported Thursday. The decline snapped a three...

Disneyland could allow for social distancing at 50% capacity, data shows

Disneyland could theoretically let in 25,000 to 30,000 visitors per day and still allow for six feet of social distancing per person when the Anaheim theme park reopens with new COVID-19 health and safety protocols in place, according to new data analysis. Disneyland could comfortably accommodate 50% of the 110-acre theme park’s theoretical pre-COVID-19 attendance capacity, according to estimates by the Thinkwell Group. Census: 30% of Inland Empire late on rent, 17% in Los Angeles-Orange County

The pandemic’s economic pain has battered renters far more than it has homeowners as some fresh data from the U.S. Census Bureau reminds us. In Riverside and San Bernardino counties, 336,000 adults live in households that are behind on rent due in the week ended Aug. 31, according to the bureau. That’s 30% of all Inland Empire tenants and almost twice the rate in Los Angeles and Orange counties where 537,000 who live in rentals were late payers — 17% of all tenants. The Inland Empire payment cha...

These stars of fall flower gardens are starting to appear for sale in nurseries

There is a Chinese proverb that says: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” This is a metaphor for doing something without further delay, even if it could have been done 20 years ago, since it is never too late to embark on a new venture and there is no time like the present to start. However, this proverb is not meant to be taken literally since although China, like the USA, has areas with mild winters, it also has Alaskan style winters in certain region...

Is it safe to eat squirrel-bitten avocados?

Q: We have a large avocado tree that used to have great fruit but now, as the trees in our tract have gotten bigger, we have squirrels that seem to delight in taking bites out of many of the avocados. Is it safe to use these avocados if we cut around the bite marks? Is there something we can put in the tree to scare them away or keep them out of the tree? A: To answer your first question: Yes, it is safe to eat the avocados that have been bitten into if you cut out the damaged parts. Of course, ...

COVID-19 danger continues to drive joblessness in US

By PAUL WISEMAN | AP Economics Writer WASHINGTON — The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to 860,000, a historically high figure that reflects economic damage from the coronavirus outbreak. Before the pandemic hit the economy, the number signing up for jobless aid had never exceeded 700,000 in a week, even during the depths of the 2007-2009 Great Recession. Now they’ve topped 700,000 for 26 straight weeks. The Labor Department said Thursday that U.S. jobless cl...

By MICHAEL BALSAMO, ALANNA DURKIN RICHER and COLLEEN LONG | Associated Press WASHINGTON — In a private call with federal prosecutors across the country, Attorney General William Barr’s message was clear: aggressively go after demonstrators who cause violence.
