Google Will Stop Making Employees Waive Class Action Rights

Google stopped so-called forced arbitration in cases of sexual harassment and assault last year after 20,000 workers walked out to oppose how the search giant handles internal complaints. Google will do that on March 21, a spokeswoman said on Thursday. The company will also cease enforcing agreements that waived workers’ right to bring their claims as class actions.

Uber is reportedly close to making a tactical exit from India’s food delivery industry

Uber has said adamantly that it won’t exit India (or any more markets) following a hattrick of retreats from China, Russia and Southeast Asia, but does that include its food delivery business? The answer could well be yes. If media reports are right, Uber is on the cusp of a tactical exit from India’s food delivery industry. India’s Economic Times is reporting that Uber is in the final stages of a deal that would see Swiggy, the food delivery service that recently raised $1 billion and expand...

Japan’s Hayabusa 2 has landed on an asteroid, shot it with a special bullet, and returned to space

The Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa 2 has just completed the next phase of its multi-part, multi-year mission by shooting a bullet into the asteroid it had been circling and returning to space. Hopefully, the spacecraft has been able to collect samples of asteroid material kicked off from the surface by the impact from the specially made bullet that the Hayabusa craft shot. The landing and mining mission is the sequel to an earlier mission (the first Hayabusa voyage), which was a seven year voyage ...

Baidu’s video site iQiyi adds 37M subscribers in 2018 amid mounting losses

China’s Baidu, which is often compared to Alphabet’s Google, is showing no signs of slowing down its pace of betting on video content as its core advertising unit feels the squeeze from rivals. The company’s latest financial results show its video streaming business iQiyi posted a net loss of 9.1 billion yuan or $1.3 billion in 2018, compared to just 3.74 billion yuan in 2017. Help with Master Flee Versions

E.T.A. Hoffmann's last book, so far as I can tell, was Master Flea. The first version was written in 1820, and contained satirical criticisms (based on a character named Karrpanti) on the German authorities for their actions after the Napoleonic wars. In order to avoid threats of imprisonment he withdrew this material from the published version of Master Flea.. This edited version is available in Project Gutenberg and the MobileRead library. I would very much like to produce the full original v...

Lesson learned from learning

Here are some lessons learned along the way from my journey into coding:Learning to code is not something you do on the side, this requires 100% of your attentionYou can’t learn coding from reading or watching videos, you actually have to do it, understanding things passively is totally different from getting a machine to do what you want, which involves getting many small details right You can get lost for days in endless searches to figure something out, and then all of a sudden everything fal...

Google is ditching its mandatory arbitration policy after mass protest (GOOG, GOOGL)

On Thursday, Google announced it would end forced arbitration for all internal matters moving forward. Forced arbitration is a corporate practice whereby upon their hiring, employees waive their right to take some employer disputes to court, and instead must settle the matters privately. Previously, Google had made arbitration optional for sexual-harassment and sexual-assault disputes only. An end to forced arbitration was a major cause for Google Walkout organizers who said on Thursday: "We c...

After topping Wall Street's estimates, Roku's in 'a strong position' to take on Amazon and other rivals, says its CFO (ROKU)

Roku, which has transformed itself into an ad-based business, is in a prime position to compete in the free streaming video market, Steve Louden, its chief financial officer said. It not only knows what people are watching, it can direct viewers to channels that run its ads, including its own Roku Channel, he said. That gives it a leg up on some of its competitors, such as Amazon, which just launched its own free streaming video channel. Roku isn't worried about Amazon or anyone else horning ...

Waymo Self-Driving Cars Can Now Obey Police Hand Signals

In the event that a traffic light is not working, Waymo's self-driving cars will now be able to use AI to detect and respond to the arm movements of a traffic cop as they wave traffic through an intersection. You can watch a demo of it on YouTube. Futurism reports: Waymo first claimed that its autonomous vehicles could respond to hand signals from nearby cyclists back in 2016. That particular research treated cyclists, from the vehicle's perspective, as obstacles to track and avoid. A new video ...

On Thursday night, SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the first-ever private moon mission. If the Beresheet mission survives a weeks-long trip to the lunar surface, it will make Israel the fourth country ev...

IBM's Watson Anywhere lets customers run AI on any cloud they want, and it's a sign that IBM is pulling back from plugging its own cloud (IBM)

On Feb. 12, IBM announced Watson Anywhere, which allows customers to run IBM's flagship artificial intelligence service on any cloud they want or even on their own equipment. Analysts believe this is an effective strategy and shows that IBM is focusing on its customers who want to use multiple clouds or a hybrid cloud, rather than pushing on its own cloud. But analysts are also skeptical about whether Watson has significant advantages over the artificial intelligence services provided by bigge...

BBC to broadcast radio using 5G in Orkney

The BBC is to run a six-week experiment broadcasting radio programmes using 5G technology as part of a wider public trial in Stronsay, Orkney. 5G broadcast works by sending a single version of a programme out over a wide area, which anybody in range can receive. This differs from live-streaming, where the same programme is sent individually to every person that requests it. Using a modified version of the new BBC Sounds app and a broadcast-ready smartphone, those taking part in the BBC trial ...
