Identifying Business Winners And Losers

The differences in the performance of Apple and Amazon versus Radio Shack, Toys-R-Us, and Blockbuster in the same economic environment raise the question of what made their fate so different. Why would a cash machine like Blockbuster go under while a thousand-dollar investment in Apple in 2008, at the beginning of the great recession, would be worth more than $7000 in 2018? Toys-R-Us, an established, innovative retailer, fell apart in this period. Meanwhile, a thousand-dollar investment in the ...

Amazon Sellers Are Marking Products As 'Collectible' To Get Around Price Gouging Rules

Amazon has suspended thousands of third-party sellers for price gouging during the COVID-19 pandemic, but sellers have found a loophole to avoid detection when raising prices: labeling their products as "collectibles," even if there's no conceivable way they could be. The Verge reports: Take this Bowflex dumbbell set, which my colleague Casey Newton encountered while browsing Amazon. Before it sold out in mid-March, Amazon had been selling the weights for $279. This week, the only available weig...

Toyota said Friday that the standard trim of the plug-in vehicle, the RAV4 Prime SE, will start at $39,220,  a price that includes the mandatory $1,120 destination charge. Weekend reading: Just the links, ma’am

What caught my eye this week. I was Zoom-ing all over the place on Friday, and in-between there was the awkward pantomime of a supposedly socially-distanced furniture delivery to contend with. (Have you ever tried to hold one end of half-assembled five-foot long bookshelf at a distance of six-feet? It’s tricky.) Short story shorter: let’s get cracking with the links. Enjoy the weekend – and enjoy your own company and those immediately around you. From Monday you could have more than furniture...

Why Donald Trump’s war on Big Tech is doomed to fail (ars technica)

Enlarge (credit: Aurich Lawson / Getty Images) Donald Trump is mad at Twitter, Facebook, and other big technology companies, and in an Oval Office statement on Thursday, he pledged to do something about it. "A small handful of social media monopolies controls a vast portion of all public and private communications in the United States," he said. "They've had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter, virtually any form of communication between private citizens and large pub...

As wildfire season approaches, AI could pinpoint risky regions using satellite imagery

The U.S. has suffered from devastating wildfires over the last few years as global temperatures rise and weather patterns change, making the otherwise natural phenomenon especially unpredictable and severe. To help out, Stanford researchers have found a way to track and predict dry, at-risk areas using machine learning and satellite imagery. Currently the way forests and scrublands are tested for susceptibility to wildfires is by manually collecting branches and foliage and testing their water c...

Sony will show off the first PlayStation 5 games on June 4th

Sony has been dishing out details on the PlayStation 5 piece-by-piece, rather than dropping all of the details at one big mega event. First came word of the Holiday 2020 release window. Then came an overview of the specs — like that it’ll have a super fast solid state drive by default. Most recently, they showed off the controller. (The divvied up approach makes sense, really; with the ongoing pandemic preventing events like E3 and GDC from happening… why wouldn’t Sony work on their own sched...
