This leather and stainless steel Active Strap is the band your Apple Watch never knew it needed

If there’s any knock on most smartwatches, up to and including the industry-leading Apple Watch, it’s probably that the bands aren’t...well, they aren’t usually the greatest.  While Apple is certainly making strides in the watchband game , most models are just as black, boring and nondescript as you’d expect from a tech company.  And where many watch bands truly fall apart is when they’re pushed during daily use, as water, strain, sweat and more all work to literally make cheap bands sta...

Your future MacBook will probably look a lot more like the iPhone — and that could be just what Apple needs to get ahead of Windows (AAPL)

Apple will start developing its own chips for future Mac computers, a shift that could give the tech giant more freedom to create custom Mac features that are closely tied to its software. It's an approach that Apple has taken with the iPhone and Apple Watch, both of which have features powered by the neural engine in Apple's homegrown chips. The development of its own silicon is just one way in which Apple is blending its mobile and desktop ecosystems. The company is also redesigning the Mac'...

Apple Watch Executive Kevin Lynch Discusses New Sleep Tracking and Hand Washing Features

Following WWDC last week, Apple's VP of Technology Kevin Lynch has taken time to discuss the Apple Watch's new sleep tracking and hand washing features in watchOS 7 with publications like The Independent, CNET, and TechCrunch. While some third-party apps provide very detailed sleep analysis, Apple's implementation of sleep tracking is fairly basic, focusing only on duration of sleep, movement disturbances, and heart rate. Lynch told CNET that this simplicity was an intentional decision, notin...

Apple began work on the Watch’s hand washing feature years before COVID-19

Handwashing for the Apple Watch happily slotted alongside face masks for Memojis in the list of COVID-19-related features the company introduced at last week’s WWDC keynote. It’s a pedestrian action, something we take entirely for granted the several times a day we do it. Over the past five months, however, handwashing has taken on a kind of central importance to our daily lives — something to focus on and obsess over. We all read the WHO and CDC guidelines and shared (and perhaps even creat...

Apple’s software updates give a glimpse of software in a COVID-19 era

Apple is responding to the COVID-19 crisis with a range of new features across its software platforms. Some are intended to directly combat the threat of the novel coronavirus, as with Apple Watch’s new handwashing feature. Other updates can be seen in a new light in the COVID-19 era. For example, your Apple Watch can track your TikTok dances as a “workout,” now that you’re not going to the gym. A new sleep feature pushes you to get more rest. Apple Maps has also added a dedicated cycling featur...

Apple spent its biggest conference of the year playing catch-up to Android rather than setting the stage for the iPhone's future (AAPL)

One of the biggest changes coming to iOS 14 is the ability to customize your home screen with widgets in different sizes, a feature that Android phones have had for years. Overall, changes like this make it feel like Apple is playing catch up with its new iPhone software rather than laying the foundation for what comes next. For example, the company barely mentioned augmented reality updates during the conference, which is sees as being the next big leap forward in consumer technology apps.  V...
