The pandemic was top of mind in the tech of CES 2021

Of course COVID-19 was bound to be an unavoidable topic during the first-ever all-virtual CES. After all, the topic is at front of mind regardless of the topic these days. Close to a year into the pandemic, presenters still understandably feel obligated to address the always-present elephant in the room. Sometimes it was as simple as acknowledging the strangeness of moving from the Las Vegas Convention Center to a Microsoft-powered virtual venue. Other times it felt far more forced. When it come...

The biggest tech show of the year usually provides a glimpse into the future. But CES 2021 was all about the past year of pandemic life.

Razer Project Hazel Razer The biggest theme at CES 2021 was adapting to the changes in life brought on by COVID-19. Smart masks with built-in microphones, robots that can disinfect with UV light, and laptops that are better equipped for Zoom calls were among the highlights. That represents a departure for CES, which is usually about envisioning the future of tech, transportation, health, and the home than reflecting on the past year. CES Daily: New adventures in the new normal

Today is the final day of CES 2021. First billed as a virtual conference that would replicate, to the best of its ability, the camaraderie and awe that define its annual in-person Las Vegas event, many attendees have been left divided as to whether this year’s show hit the spot or missed the mark. In reality, CES was more akin to a series of back-to-back Zoom calls—one that cost exhibitors hefty sums that aren’t too far off from the price of showcasing themselves at the real event. You may be yo...

Pat Gelsinger stepping down as VMware CEO to replace Bob Swan at Intel

In a move that could have wide ramifications across the tech landscape, Intel announced that VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger would be replacing interim CEO Bob Swann at Intel on February 15th. It has to be a thrill for him to go back to his roots and try to jump start the company. “I ...

Lenovo keeps rolling out unique takes on familiar categories this year at CES. Dell monitors embrace video calls with pop-up webcams and Teams buttons built in

Dell’s latest monitors reflect the growing need for simple, solid solutions to video conferencing needs, with a clever pop-up camera and a perhaps too clever by half Teams integration. The new displays integrate a number of advanced features — but they’re still made strictly with offices in mind. The new Dell 24, 27, and 34 Video Conferencing Monitors are clearly meant to be a turnkey solution to the need at many companies for video-capable setups that don’t cost a fortune. The most interesti...

Dell's XPS 17 Proves Big-Screen Laptops Are Back, and They're Awesome

A few years back, a lot of major laptop makers began quietly paring down the number of 17-inch laptops they made (aside from monstrously large gaming rigs), with Apple and Dell dropping the 17-inch MacBook Pro and XPS 17 respectively. However, thanks to improvements like smaller bezels and improved energy efficiency,…Read more...
