LG Will Launch a Phone With a Second Screen Attachment

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNET: LG's next smartphone may have you seeing double. And no, it's not because of a foldable display. The company will launch a smartphone, whose name hasn't been finalized, that will have an option for a second-screen attachment, according to a person familiar with the situation. The attachment, which the person describes as a sort of case with a screen, could potentially double the total screen size of the device. It's one of multiple phones launching ...

The Top Consumer Electronic Products and Concepts of 2018

As the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is upon us, we thought that now would be the best time to review what trended in 2018, as we also take a look at how that may shape our 2019. Phones have always played a massive part of the consumer electronic showcase, and this year is no different. We tried to kill the bezel this year, and are one step closer to an all-screen phone. We’re also seeing 5G make its way into our lives. Along with phones, wireless chargers have taken off (except Apple’s AirPow...

Is Samsung getting serious about robotics?

A funny thing happened at Samsung’s CES press conference. After the PC news, 8K TVs and Bixby-sporting washing machines, the company announced “one more thing,” handing over a few brief moments to announce a robotics division, three new consumer and retail robots and a wearable exoskeleton. It was a pretty massive reveal in an extremely short space, and, quite frankly, raised far more questions than it answered. Within the broader context of a press conference, it’s often difficult to determi...

LG’s 65-Inch Rollable 4K OLED TV Will Hit the Market Soon

Referred to as the OLED TV R, LG’s groundbreaking 65-inch rollable 4K television will be released to consumers this spring. The TV offers many different functional modes, each with a different screen size—one of which, known as zero view, sees the entire screen descend into the base but audio functions still active through the 100W front-firing Dolby Atmos audio system. LG, who presented the TV at CES …

How Big Are the “Next Big Things” in Tech?

Source: Statista Thousands of tech enthusiasts and industry insiders are flocking to Las Vegas this week to find out about the latest developments in the world of consumer electronics at CES 2019. The convention has barely started and manufacturers are already trying to steal the show by showing off their (often literally) biggest or most outlandish innovations. LG made some waves on Monday by unveiling a rollable 65-inch OLED TV that appears out of a box when needed. Meanwhile others have shown...

The best TV we saw at CES 2019

The LG Signature OLED TV R stole the show at last year's CES, and it was still the most impressive TV at CES 2019. The major TV trend at CES 2019 was 8K resolution, and it looks incredible, but they were essentially just TVs with upgraded resolutions at the end of the day.  LG is the dominant force in OLED panels, which allow for flexible designs like the Signature OLED TV R. CES 2019 was packed with gorgeous and amazing TVs, but the model that stole the show was last year's incredible LG rol...

LG Introduces Rollable OLED TV

One of the 2019 TV models LG outlined at its CES press conference today was the LG Signature OLED TV R (65R9), which has a display that can roll up and disappear into its base when you're not using it. "LG calls the TV 'a revolutionary innovation that helps address the very human need for an aesthetically pleasing environment' and says it is 'redefining space' to offer unprecedented levels of 'immersion' and 'a new level of space integration,'" reports Ars Technica. From the report: LG says to e...

10 things in tech you need to know today

Good morning! This is the tech news you need to know this Tuesday. The world's largest tech show CES has kicked off, and LG stole the show with a "rollable" TV that disappears into a box at the push of a button. When not being used, the skinny TV rolls down into a box that also doubles as a soundbar. Apple trolled Google with a massive billboard at CES, which it isn't even attending. The ad was positioned near Las Vegas' monorail system, whose shuttles are emblazoned with Google ads. SoftBank ...

AT&T is pretending like 5G is already here – and misleading users

Last week, owners of select LG and Samsung phones using AT&T network got a software update that changed the “4G” icon in their status bar to “5GE” (E stands for Evolution). In reality, AT&T hasn’t really deployed a 5G network yet – it’s just renaming LTE Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro to 5GE. That’s as misleading as it gets. AT&T issued the update to the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, the LG V30, and the V40, and the changelog noted just a single item: “5G Evolution indicator support added.” The carri...

IBM was awarded the most patents in 2018, but overall grants declined by 3.5 percent

We may have passed the peak of the “patent war” in the mobile industry, but the concept of patents as power is far from disappearing, since they continue to be a strong marker for how a company is breaking new ground in technology, and do sometimes help to safeguard an inventor’s or company’s original work — even if the legal enforcement around patents sometimes gets abused. Patent research firm IFI Claims today published its annual report on how patent grants played out in the tech industry in ...

AT&T Misleads Customers by Updating Phones With Fake 5G Icon

As promised, AT&T has updated three smartphones from Samsung and LG to make them show 5G connectivity logos, even though none of them are capable of connecting to 5G networks. From a report: Now, when the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active, LG V30, or LG V40 are connected to portions of AT&T's LTE network that have received some speed-boosting updates, they'll show an icon that says "5G E" instead of "LTE." That "E" in the "5G" logo is supposed to tip you off that this isn't real 5G -- just some marketing...

Top 25 Audio Product Designs from 2018

I’ll admit, I have an affinity for all things audio, so this list was bound to happen at some point! Audio isn’t, however, just a passion of mine… it’s also a massive industry that grows as the smartphone industry grows, because music and entertainment play a major role in the smartphone experience. We’ve seen a lot of growth in the truly-wireless audio wearable department (I even got my hands on the TicPods featured below… review pending) as well as the smart-speaker making its way into the hom...

LG is adding Apple AirPlay and HomeKit support to its TVs

There’s a trend here. After Samsung and Vizio, LG is also adding support for Apple’s ecosystem to its TV operating system webOS. Specifically, people who buy an LG TV in 2019 should be able to share content to their TVs using AirPlay 2. TVs will also be compatible with HomeKit, letting you create custom scenarios and control your TV using Siri. “Many of our customers may also happen to have Apple devices,” Senior Director of Home Entertainment Product Marketing Tim Alessi said during the c...

Apple's Snuck Its Way Into LG's 2019 Televisions

Today LG announced its high-end 2019 television sets. Not anything crucial like model names or prices—just that the sets were coming and they’d be nicer than what we already have. Also, we learned that they’d support Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. Yup, Samsung and Vizio aren’t the only TV makers playing nice with Apple…Read more...

LG says its AI can detect home appliance problems before they happen

This morning’s LG CES press conference was, predictably, all about TVs. Big TVs. High res TVs. Rolling TVs. The company did, however, give a little stage time to its appliance line and, per usual, allotted some lip service to its ThinQ AI offering. The company’s definition and use of artificial intelligence seems nebulous, at best from the outside. But LG, like many others, is convinced that the future of hardware is largely software based. As of this morning, that also extends to customer servi...

LG’s ridiculous retractable TV takes a step closer to reality

Will LG’s over-the-top rollable TV ever be real? And at the end of the day does it really matter? The company offered another glimpse at the 65-inch LG Signature OLED TV R (model 65R9) during its CES press conference. It’s ever bit as big, brush and completely unnecessary as ever. Ultimately these kinds of devices are a way to plant a flag in the sand — to show off the possibilities from all the money they’re pumping into R&D. More than likely, such a set isn’t coming home with you any time s...

LG’s capsule-based beer maker will test your patience

LG unveiled the LG HomeBrew a few weeks ahead of CES. I’ve seen the device today, and it looks like a gigantic, inconvenient machine. It’s hard to grasp the size of the device based on photos, but it’s as big as a full-size espresso machine. You’ll need a big counter in your kitchen. But that’s not the issue. The system uses a set of capsules. There’s a big tube-shaped malt capsule and three tiny Nespresso-shaped capsules for yeast, hop oil and flavoring. All these capsules come in a single b...

LG Unveils 88-inch 8K TV That Doubles as a Giant Speaker

Last year LG Display unveiled a rollable OLED TV prototype, which is reportedly becoming a real retail product in 2019. This year they're at it again with a giant 8K OLED set that doubles as a speaker and a weird flower sculpture made entirely of the flexible OLED panels. From a report: As TV's get thinner, it's getting harder and harder to produce audio that isn't thin. Enter LG Displayâ(TM)s 88-inch Crystal Sound OLED set. It has a 3..2.2 sound system embedded directly into the display. The so...

HP releases a monster $5k, 65-inch gaming display

The HP Omen X Emperium is not meant to watch reruns of The Office. Though it can. This display is one of the first in Nvidia’s family of Big Format Gaming Displays. Unlike traditional large displays, these are certified by Nvidia and are said to deliver the best gaming experience through the smoothest motion. This doesn’t come cheap. The Omen X Emperium is $5,000 and will be available in February. Last summer Nvidia announced its intention to work with several manufacturers to produce these disp...
