Big wave of applicants crashes LA County restaurant aid website

A surge of applicants has crashed a Los Angeles County website used to process  restaurant assistance grant applications on Thursday, Dec. 3, as county officials say they are working to solve the problem and get the site back online. The Keep L.A. County Dining Program application portal crashed on Thursday morning, hours after it initially opened. The $5.6 million program is meant to provide $30,000 grants to 2,500 Los Angeles County restaurants — just a fraction of the tens of thousands of eat...

Five favorite podcasts you should start listening to

Entertainment is filled with content that you follow on television, on the radio, and in recent years, on podcasts. Podcasts began as “audio blogging” in the late 1980s, but it wasn’t until Apple’s iPod that they began to grab our attention around 2004. Now you can find podcasts focusing on subjects about everything. If you can think of it, there’s probably already a podcast on it – with more created every day. The topics about business industries, entertainment, self-help, or creative storytell...

‘Hamilton’ star Leslie Odom Jr. releases new Christmas album ahead of Sam Cooke role in ‘One Night in Miami’

Tony and Grammy Award-winning singer and actor Leslie Odom Jr. said he’d never really thought about releasing holiday music until his followers on Twitter insisted. Odom, best known for his portrayal of Aaron Burr in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway smash, “Hamilton,” said fans would tweet at him saying, “Leslie, please record a Christmas album” or “I’d love to hear you sing this Christmas song,” he recalled with a laugh during a recent phone interview from his Los Angeles-area home. Odom now has t...

Buenos Aires (AFP) – Huge crowds bade a grief-filled farewell to Argentina’s favourite son Diego Maradona before the football legend was buried on the outskirts of Buenos Aires after a chaotic public wake. The 1986 World Cup winner widely regarded as one of the greatest players in history was laid to rest on Thursday after a ceremony attended by family and close friends in the Bella Vista cemetery.  Maradona, who had battled cocaine addiction for decades, died on Wednesday aged 60, sparking mou...

L.A. City Council wants plan, timeline for closing Valley Generation Station

Los Angeles city officials will explore what it would take to close a natural gas-fired power station in Sun Valley, and get a timeline for how long that would take, amid recent revelations that the facility had been leaking methane gas for at least two years. While the motion, approved by the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday, does not directly call for the closure of the Valley Generation Station, it brings the possibility of decommissioning the facility — known visually in the surrounding...

Venturing to UCLA campus to see art, architecture (but not botanic garden)

I didn’t go to UCLA. But on a recent Sunday, I went there. By car, that is. A self-guided tour of a portion of the campus is in the book “Walking L.A.,” which I’ve been using for picturesque sightseeing around the city. “UCLA is one of the most well-known campuses in the state’s famed University of California system,” writes author Erin Mahoney Harris. Her route, she says, takes in “innovative artwork, classically beautiful architecture and a lovely botanical garden that has evolved over several...

The sweet smell of fame and success: Doug McIntyre

For more than a hundred years the high cheek-boned and tapered-waisted have flocked to Southern California seeking wealth and fame, but mostly fame. In my own extremely limited way, I too took the bait. Granted, my bathroom mirror did not suggest a career on the big screen — at best a tiny blurry photo in the Sunday paper to accompany 600 words of rambling opining on subjects I am only marginally competent to discuss. Still, as far-fetched as my dreams of superstardom may have been, at no time d...

Social media platform Parler wins over millions as some raise red flags about the site

Ann-Cherie Harden opened an account on Parler a year ago, long before the social media platform became a big hit, particularly among conservatives and supporters of President Donald Trump. “I did that then so I would have a means of communication if Facebook and Twitter decide to monitor or censor private posts and try to control what I can share,” the Whittier woman said, adding that she now sees many others have joined her on the platform billing itself as “the world’s town square.” Harden is ...

Hollywood man arrested after September drone crash with LAPD helicopter

FBI agents on Thursday, Nov. 19, arrested a Hollywood man on the federal charge of recklessly operating a drone, which collided with a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter in September. The Sept. 18 early morning incident is believed to be the first criminal case in the nation that alleges the unsafe operation of an unmanned aircraft, according to a news release. Authorities said drone camera footage showed that Andrew Rene Hernandez, 22, flew the drone. He was charged with one count of unsa...

Where does LA need trees? Google to help city figure that out

LOS ANGELES — Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a partnership Wednesday with Google on a program that will track the city’s canopy density to show where more trees need to be planted, providing residents in those neighborhoods some badly needed relief from extreme heat. “This is a powerful new tool, and we’re the first city in the country to do this,” Garcetti said. “The Tree Canopy Lab … makes it possible for us to quickly assess the areas of our city with the greatest population density and the fe...

The legend of D.B. Cooper, the mystery hijacker who got away, gets a fresh look

On Thanksgiving eve in 1971, D.B. Cooper jumped out of an airplane and into history. Cooper hijacked a Boeing 727 using a bomb as a threat. Once his demands were met for $200,000 and 4 parachutes, he released the passengers during a stopover and then jumped out of the plane later on somewhere over Washington state. Cooper, whose real name is not known, was never found, dead or alive, and only minimal evidence was ever recovered. Most notably, there were stacks of matching bills found in a r...

26 Thanksgiving meal options from Southern California casinos

Not everyone has the time or desire to make a full Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings and if you fall into that camp, Southern California’s casinos are still an option. But with the pandemic, things will be different this year. Gone are the buffet smorgasbords offering all-you-can eat delights (a casualty of the novel coronavirus) and generally there are fewer casino restaurants offering specials this year. However, there are still quite a few ready to seat and serve customers. Want to stick...

Look up, Ontario Ranch: Drone superhighway coming to a sky near you

As retailers look increasingly to futuristic drone delivery, Ontario has partnered with a Detroit company to map routes for unmanned aircraft systems to use when picking up and delivering merchandise in the city. The aerial highways are being created in anticipation of Amazon, UPS and others using such routes as airborne deliveries become more routine. Airspace Link Inc. is creating what it calls “the safest and most efficient routes” through its AirHub mapping platform. The yearly service will ...

Ring doorbells can catch fire, 350,000 need to be re-installed

Ring has “recalled” hundreds of thousands of its namesake doorbell video cameras after some caught fire and people were burned. The company said there’s only a risk if the wrong screws were used for installation. “Ring has received 85 incident reports of incorrect doorbell screws installed, with 23 of those doorbells igniting, resulting in minor property damage,” the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission said in an advisory. “The firm has received eight reports of minor burns.” Ring, owned ...

Apple unveils first Macs built to run more like iPhones

By Michael Liedtke | The Associated Press Apple is rolling out new Mac computers powered by the same kind of chips that run iPhones and iPads, a move aimed at making it easier for its most popular products to work together. For instance, Macs using the new chips will be able to run the same apps designed for the iPhone’s mobile operating system, although it appears some developers aren’t immediately keen on making those apps available for Macs. Apple didn’t demonstrate any other interoperability...

Senior Living: Feeling better can be more than just a wish this holiday season

To say that many of us are experiencing some not so positive health effects related to the nearly year-long pandemic is likely a gross understatement. As the pandemic wears on, collectively, there’s a growing sense of fatigue related to the safety measures implemented by local and state public health departments. Symptoms of depression, anxiety disorder, substance use disorder, and suicidal ideation have increased dramatically between the months of April and June 2020 compared to the same period...

Review: With a nod to the past, fully loaded Xbox Series X is built for the future

The Xbox One was a console that gamers weren’t ready for. Released in 2013, it was ahead of its time when it came to voice control. Before households were saying “Hey Alexa” to a smart speaker, Microsoft wanted players to say “Xbox on.” As games as a service developed into “Fortnite” and “Destiny,” the need for an always-on internet connection became apparent. It was an element that drew criticism against the product. Building toward the future has always been built embedded in the console famil...

Southern Californians face rainy weekend, snow in some spots

Chino tied for 1st place as the hottest spot in the U.S. on Thursday (along with near Ramona, AZ) the National Weather Service said, but the thermostat is about to take a deep dive. A storm is forecast to usher in rain, snow and cold weather to Southern California this weekend. Several fire officials said they don’t think the rain will trigger massive flooding or mudslides in areas hit by recent wildfires. They plan to keep an eye out for any problems, though. And those heading to the mountains ...

When it comes to calling presidential races, the Associated Press stands alone

The Associated Press will not predict a winner of the presidential election. It will not even name an apparent or likely winner. The AP will make the call only when it is certain — just as it has in every U.S. election since 1848, when Zachary Taylor won the White House. “If there’s no way for the trailing candidate to catch up, no legal way, no mathematical way, then the race is decided, essentially,” Sally Buzbee, AP’s executive editor, said in an interview. “And if there is any uncertainty, o...

Tech losses drive Wall Street down again, ending grim week

By Stan Choe and Alex Veiga | The Associated Press Wall Street closed out another punishing week Friday with the S&P 500 posting its first back-to-back monthly loss since the pandemic first gripped the economy in March. The S&P 500 dropped 1.2% and ended the week with a 5.6% loss, its worst in seven months. Sharp drops in big technology stocks drove much of the selling, reflecting worries that expectations built too high for some of the market’s biggest stars, including Apple and Amazon. Investo...
