Rotating showers?

There are six fountains around the « Rond-Point des Champs-Elysées ». They have been “under renovation” for years. … and now!?!? I tried to take some nice photos, but… Maybe we should first have a look of what has been. The fountains were created in 1863, by Adolphe Alphand, who together with Baron Haussmann was involved in the creation of the majority of the Paris parks and gardens. In the 1930’s the fountains were beautifully decorated by the famous glass designer René Lalique. Too...

Apps for Seniors

Friend and news anchor Diane Ako produces a series called “Aging Well” on KITV4, covering stories of interest to seniors. A few weeks ago, she asked if I knew anyone who could talk about apps for people over 55. I asked my dad who, in turn, provided a couple of likely subject matter experts at Honolulu senior living complexes. “Would you be able to come on KITV and talk about apps?” Diane asked. “What’s an app?” came the reply. And that’s how I ended up the primary source on a story abo...

100 years ago, today, when Gandhi had a dream in the home of the owner of ‘The Hindu’ that led to the non-violent movement, which led to India’s independence

One hundred years ago, today, India’s struggle for independence from the British took a decisive and awe-inspiring turn, when Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had a dream that would catapult him towards ‘Mahatma’-hood. On March 18, 1919, Gandhi met C.Rajagopalachari in the City that used to be known as Madras, in a home on Cathedral Road that used to belong to Kasturi Ranga Iyengar, the lawyer who owned The Hindu. Gandhi spent the night in ‘Tilak Bhavan’, as the Iyengar home was known, tossing and tu...

Inflight Fight Leaves Blood Splatters After Woman Tries to Go to Lavatory Without Shoes

A Saturday Ryanair flight (natch) from Glasgow to Tenerife in the Canary Islands saw a fight break out after a woman went to the lavatory without shoes on. A “very drunk man pulled her up about it, saying that someone would stand on her toes” according to another passenger. Then the woman’s boyfriend got involved. And more alcohol got involved. Week 15: Viva Las Vegas Baby!

We weren’t intending on visiting Vegas on our America Unplugged road trip. Our intention on  this trip is to go beyond the main tourist destinations that everyone knows, and strangely, wants to visit. But, since we were close by, and our Australian readers insist on incorporating Vegas into their travel plans, we decided why not? I wasn’t expecting to have a great time – I mean how long can you spend looking at casinos before you get bored? But, I arrived intending to have a great time and see V...

5 Weird Things I Do To Earn Frequent Flyer Points (which you could easily incorporate into your life too)

There are literally thousands of ways to earn air miles or frequent flyer points. While I am not as crazy as the pudding guy (although he’s kind of a genius to have worked out how to earn over a million points through buying pudding!) and I don’t have too many super inventive stories, I do have some… quirks… when it comes to how I earn Qantas points. Some weirder than others. Most of these are things you too can do to earn more frequent flyer points without flying. I shop at my rival I’m so...

Huge, Hello Kitty-related urban art

Due to its very nature, urban art isn’t destined to last. Demolition, wilful damage or simply time all too often eradicate what once entertained. A few of my favourite pieces in Tokyo were this tiny Audrey Hepburn stencil, and these kimono and seppuku inspired works. All of which are now sadly long gone. That said, the odd one or two do manage to survive. Astro Boy continues to blast off in Shibuya, and this huge, Hello Kitty-related street painting remains intact to resolutely stare back. ...
