Here are the 88 companies that launched at YC’s W19 Demo Day 2

Today was the second half of Y Combinator’s two-day Demo Day for its Winter 2019 class. Over 85 startups pitched on stage yesterday, and another huge batch launched today. Previously held at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, this YC Demo Day instead took over a massive warehouse in San Francisco. Like yesterday’s pitches, today’s were split across two stages (“Pioneer” and “Mission”) running in parallel — so even if you were there, you couldn’t see everything alone. Here are all o...

Things to see and do in Kolkata

If there is a city in India where traditional heritage merges with the contemporary, the city of Kolkata is it. Nostalgia seeps from every alley and suffuses the classic old trams, the yellow taxis, and the iconic Howrah Bridge. Even the bars of Park Street have a classic West Bengali air to them. India’s third largest metropolis and the capital of West Bengal is also a city of contrasts — between wrenching poverty and glistening new malls. Here is why Kolkata, with its symphony of colors and...

OPEC Must Dig Deeper to Trim Stockpiles: Oil Strategy - Bloomberg:OPEC members have done just about enough to bring oil production into line with the world’s need for their crude in 2019, but they will have to keep the restraint going throughout the year, just to prevent stockpiles from rising. For the love of Amba: How I came to eat swarma with a cabbie in Tel Aviv

“Now you are not a customer, you are a friend. I can smoke,” Ofer, my uber driver turned friend said to me as he leant over to swipe his phone, turning off the metre. As he quickly flicked open the box that was in his shirt pocket, he turned to me, in as much as one can turn in a car seat, “Want a cigarette?“ I was back in Israel again a lot sooner than I had expected. In fact, I only left two-weeks prior thinking I’d be back in July. Instead I was back after one of my guides to Hebron messag...

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: Best Value in Luxury Cruises?

Is Regent Seven Seas Cruises the Best Value in Luxury Cruises? Regent Seven Seas Cruises makes a bold claim that they are the best value in luxury cruises. And interestingly, they seem to be willing to back up their claim each year with written comparisons that they make between themselves and other luxury cruise providers. While I am one who strongly feels that you can’t and shouldn’t judge a luxury travel experience solely by price, as so many are want to do, it certainly makes sense to bring...

This robot will park your car for you as you rush to the airport

We may not be near having artificial intelligence drive our cars, but we’re living in an age where robots and AI will park our cars for us. An airport in Lyon, France is debuting a robot designed by Stanley Robotics, which will latch onto your car and park it for you as you rush to board your flight. Given that parking your car on a tight schedule can often result in a loss of precious minutes, the Lyon Airport is relying on an army of car-parking bots that gently carry your car to the nearest v...

Mexico's Popocatépetl volcano erupts

After the Popocatépetl volcano erupted late Monday in central Mexico, residents are being warned about ash rain and mudslides. According to Mexico’s National Centre of Disaster Prevention (CENAPRED), the eruption spewed a column of ash nearly 4,000 feet into the air, and while there haven’t been any reported injuries yet, CENAPRED is encouraging people to be watchful. Cleanest airlines in the world

Skytrax, a UK-based aviation industry reviewer, asked passengers to rate the standard and quality of aircraft cabins, and the results are in. Based on the results of Skytrax’s global survey, the world’s cleanest airlines have been revealed, and the list is overwhelmingly lopsided. Not a single US– or UK-based carrier made the list. Instead, it was dominated largely by airlines from Asia. Japan’s All Nippon Airways claimed the list’s number one spot, with Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, Ca...

What’s it Like to Travel in Japan?

I thought I had finished writing about Japan, but it turns out I was wrong. My posts about Japan have quickly become my most-read of all time and I’m now starting to receive a hell of a lot of questions about how to make the most of a trip to this wonderful country. I’m diving back into my time in the Land of the Rising Sun, then, and planning on sharing a ton of resources over the next couple of weeks. Up first: what it’s like to travel in Japan! Best dog sledding in Park City, Utah

Cradling an 80-pound Alaskan husky like a baby, an impassioned Fernando Ramirez traces his intense bond with his dogs back to his childhood. When he was an eight-year-old in Park City, Utah, he desperately wanted to take up dog sledding. His mother, who grew up on a farm in Mexico breaking horses and taking in stray dogs, agreed under one condition: He must use rescue dogs. Twenty years later, when Fernando decided to step away from pursuing a career in physical therapy and marathon racing to...

A unique old clothes shop on a shuttered Japanese high street

Away from Japan’s big cities, the combination of a shrinking population and urban migration are having a visibly devastating effect. Once thriving towns are now all too often little more than sad reminders of the past, with shops shuttered up and former essentials such as train services slowly disappearing. A phenomenon I documented just recently in this photo essay: Looking for the lost. Of course not everything closes, and life does go on for the generally older residents who remain, meaning a...

Sleepless.

The unthinkable happened yesterday.I got a call from my landlord asking me to pay my rent that was overdue. No, the rent was not overdue because I could not pay. I have the money. But because there is a cash component in the rent that requires me to withdraw cash and send someone over to his office and deposit the same. Haha, cashless economy. And of course, I could not find someone to do that! Thus the snafu. So the landlord called me and was curt when he spoke to me about it. I don't blame him....
