Looking to the Future: San Marco - The Basilica of Venice in the Third Millennium

Sala del Maggior Consiglio - Great Council Chamber - Photo: Cat Bauer (Venice, Italy) Power. Glory. Wealth. The sheer magnificence of the Great Council Chamber inside Palazzo Ducale is overwhelming. The immense hall was where the noblemen of the Great Council of the Venetian Republic convened, the 1,000 to 2,000 aristocrats who composed the most important political body of Venice and who were the guardians of the laws of State. The Great Council met for the first time in the Sala del Magg...

Too much...?

This “hôtel particulier”, a former private mansion house – now a school – is very rich on decorations, maybe on the limit of “too much”? Well, it has not always looked like this, the building has been transformed during the centuries. The original building dates from the 16th century and has changed owners – and shape and decorations… - a number of times. It is today known as “Hôtel Fieubet” , but has also been known as “Hôtel Combourg”, “Hôtel Lavalette”… Below we can see s...

Treasure Trove of Behind the Scenes Data on Frequent Flyer Programs

I stumbled upon a treasure trove of current data on frequent flyer programs published at the beginning of the year. Some airlines have disclosed newer data in investor filings over the past three months since this was published, however it’s still largely current. How many members do frequent flyer programs have? When will miles be redeemed? How many miles will never be redeemed? How much will redemptions cost the airlines? Continue reading Treasure Trove of Behind the Scenes Data on Frequent F...

Week 19: Valley of the Gods and Moab, Utah

Life can slip on past you real fast. You can get so caught up in present moment challenges and the future goals that you forget where you have come from. You fail to see all you have achieved because you’re so focused on what is left to come. Hustle replaces humility. Fisher Towers Hike, Moab, Utah I love how travel humbles me. I sit under a starry sky and I can’t help but feel small. I’m no more or less important than the stars. I am but a tiny speck, and yet that speck is part of something...

Miniature Toiletry Bottles in Hotels: What Really Should Be Done

If Ash Kalra has his way, personal care products in the form of miniature plastic toiletry bottles — which contain fewer than 12 ounces of liquid product — would be banned from lodging establishments in California. Kalra — who represents parts of eastern San Jose in the 27th Assembly District in the California State Assembly as a member of the Democratic political party — submitted an amendment to Assembly Bill number 1162 to prohibit lodging establishments in the state of California from “provi...

One Way I’ve Dealt With Hotel Upgrade Shenanigans in the Past – But It’s Risky

Here's what I've done in a similar situation. I once checked in at the Park Hyatt Sydney early in the morning after a long transpacific flight. They told me they did not have any standard rooms available (I had redeemed points) but they did have an Opera View King available and if I wanted that room it would be an extra AU$100 per night for my 5 night stay. (Since they were 'full' they wouldn't offer any complimentary upgrades.) Unquestionably this is a room type eligible for elite upgrade. ...

in which two humans figure out how to make a yard safe for canines

We did it! We closed the gaps in our partially fenced yard, in a way that looks decent, was within our budget, and within our skill set.First we researched online, and eliminated many possibilities. Then we simplified the project by choosing the least number of gaps to close that would still give the dogs a nice-sized area to play in, and by not having a gate. After investigating local options, we drove five hours round-trip to the Home Depot in Campbell River to buy materials, and visited an off-...

California Threatens to Destroy the Hotel Bathroom Experience Outlawing Mini Toiletry Bottles

First they came for the straws, but I don’t drink from plastic straws so I said nothing. Now they’re coming for miniature shampoo, conditioner, and bath gel as California considers outlawing single use toiletries. That means hotels would install wall dispensers in the shower but wall dispensers are awful and must be stopped. And it turns out this is a gift to corporate hotel interests under the fig leaf of the environment. Continue reading California Threatens to Destroy the Hotel Bathroom Expe...
