Roman Baths

I mentioned in a previous post that the water consumption per capita during the Roman times (1st to 4th centuries) in Paris, then referred to as Lutetia, was higher than today, maybe then some 250 litres against hardly 200 litres today. One reason to the high water consumption was of course to a great part due to the baths. There were several of them. The one, which to a large part still can be seen, is referred to as the “northern one”, today as the “Cluny Baths” (“Thermes de Cluny”). The medi...

The Wild Life in Mackay

There's much been written about the drives around the world: the Road to Hana or the Route des Grandes Alpes but there's something surprisingly lovely about the drive from Mackay to Eungella. Ivy and I were busy talking and as I looked out the car window the greens and the sunlit grass covered mountains it struck me almost like a punch to the eye.

Visit Myrtle Beach this summer

The great beach vacation is as American a summer tradition as baseball games and regrettable decisions with fireworks. Family trips to the shore are the stuff of endless childhood nostalgia, full of taffy and soft serve ice cream, midway rides, and Ferris wheels. It is for kids anyway. Because kids don’t have to pay for any of that. Moms, dads, and other adults, however, have to plunk down their credit cards for all that seaside serenity. Which, if you’re at all budget conscious, can make yo...

How Much Would You Pay to Avoid Connecting? And How Long is Too Long to Wait in an Airport?

If you've never missed a flight you're spending too much time in airports. Non-stops are nearly always better than connecting, though on the longest flights the time a connection adds to your overall journey is relatively smaller ( if everything goes as planned). Passengers prefer non-stop travel over connections, but at what margin? How much are people willing to spend to avoid a connection and does it depend on how long of a connection they'd have to take? Continue reading How Much Would Yo...

Azulejos Tiles of Portugal

I just returned from my whirlwind trip to Portugal, I saw *so much* in the nine days I spent there, and I’ll do a recap post in the coming weeks of this magical country! As you know, I’m always inspired by traveling to new cities and countries, for me the best thing in life is the intersection of travel and design. There was no shortage of ceramic tile inspiration in Portugal, in fact it’s one of the primary reasons I journeyed there, to witness it in real life and I was completely mesmerized by...

One Credit Card is Now Offering a Bucket to New Customers Who Apply

Don't discount the value of a bucket as a signup bonus! Along with some pvc pipe, gravel, sand and charcoal you could use a bucket to build a water filter. You can grow food inside of a bucket. Or harvest rainwater. You could even attach a couple of straps to the bucket and make it a backpack. With holes near the bottom of the bucket, and placed inside roasting pans, you might be able to use it to feed chickens. Buckets are also super useful if the ALS Foundation gets the ice bucket challenge t...

How I podcast: Start With This/Welcome to Night Vale’s Jeffrey Cranor

The beauty of podcasting is that anyone can do it. It’s a rare medium that’s nearly as easy to make as it is to consume. And as such, no two people do it exactly the same way. There are a wealth of hardware and software solutions open to potential podcasters, so setups run the gamut from NPR studios to USB Skype rigs. We’ve asked some of our favorite podcast hosts and producers to highlight their workflows — the equipment and software they use to get the job done. The list so far includes: Jesse...

LIVE! From the 2019 Venice Art Biennale - May You Live in Interesting Times

Robert Henry Lawrance Jr. by Tavares Strachan (2018) Photo: Cat Bauer (Venice, Italy) I love the way Ralph Rugoff's mind works. He has tamed the humongous Biennale beast by reducing the number of artists and organizing the vast Arsenale space into smaller compartments. Even though he says there is no theme, the artists he invited to participate have captured the essence of the title, "May You Live in Interesting Times." That "ancient Chinese curse" has been cited over the past 80 years by...

How to do the El Paso Mission Trail

Covering a nine-mile stretch of faith along the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, twisting through south Texas outside of El Paso, is the “Royal Road of the Interior.” This is the oldest — and once the longest — road in North America, running from Mexico City to Santa Fe. It contains three historic churches, which uniquely blend Mexican, Spanish, and Native American culture into centuries of spiritual and historic traditions along the Rio Grande River. The stretch is known as the El Paso Miss...

London leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to weather. More often than not, you can expect a little drizzle, sometimes leaving your plans for a cruise along the River Thames, a stroll along the South Bank, or a picnic in Hyde Park thwarted. In our ultimate rainy tour of London’s museums, we’ll have you gawping at...

Slack stock is expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange as soon as next month. Slack, which is pursuing a direct listing, will live stream Monday’s Investor Day on its website. An alternative to an initial public offering, direct listings allow businesses to forgo issuing new share...

Andaz West Hollywood’s GM Responds to Their Scammy Award Availability Strategy

Monday I wrote about how the Andaz West Hollywood keeps World of Hyatt members from using their points. The hotel benefits from being a Hyatt. They attract stays from guests loyal to the brand, and looking to earn elite night credit when staying in the area. But they appear not to want to honor the other end of their obligation by redeeming free night awards. Oil rises 1% after surprise fall in U.S. crude stockpiles - Reuters:Oil futures gained 1% on Wednesday, boosted by a surprise drawdown in U.S. crude stockpiles, but an escalating U.S.-Chinese trade fight limited oil’s gains as investors worried about the global outlook for energy demand.Brent crude futures rose 49 cents, or 0.7%, to settle at $70.37 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude ended 72 cents, or 1.2%, higher at $62.12. U.S. crude inventories fell 4 million barrels la...

Traveling and hiking with cats

For outdoorsy people the world over, it’s common — expected, even — that, while out on hikes, you’ll run into fellow hikers bringing their dogs along to enjoy the fresh air and exercise. But increasingly, we are starting to stop people walking with their cats. And pics of these hecking cute “cattos” are taking over social media, as well as hiking trails, urban bike paths, and outdoor spaces everywhere. The furr-enzy is here, and they’re called adventure cats. These photogenic felines are her...
