Week 23: One of Best Adventures in Utah yet in the Escalante Slot Canyons

I feel like I’m stuck in the Land of Eternal Winter. We’ve been teased by glimpses of the end of it for a month now. Sunny days that require only a t-shirt and shorts that have been followed by days of bitter cold where I’m digging deep into our Yakima SkyBox for my thick winter tracksuit pants I thought I had long packed away. I find camping in winter so draining and it makes me want to cry each time I return to the sweater. Noooooo. Please just give me warmth. I’ll take 100 degrees any day! ...

Behind closed doors

I really enjoy having a look behind closed doors… sometimes you are lucky and can discretely visit a nice backyard like this one. Not much to add I believe?  I’m not giving the address as it’s not officially open to public. It’s somewhere in the 14tharrondissement, not far away from this wall decoration and a rather untypical metro entrance. [Author: PeterParis]

The Power of a Passion for Italy

My little book on the Italian language had taken a beating. The couple who brought the tattered, battered copy of LA BELLA LINGUA: My Love Affair with Italian, the World's Most Enchanting Language to the Italian Cultural and Community Center in Houstonexplained what had happened: They had trekked with it to every city, site, church, museum and restaurant mentioned in the book. They are planning to do the same with my new book, LA PASSIONE: How Italy Seduced the World—but that’s not all. They ar...

Is Constant Connection Ruining Travel?

In 2019, there’s no shortage of ways to stay connected while on the road. Undeniably, the ease of connection is one of the modern conveniences that now allows more people than ever to consider stepping out into the world for an extended period. Keeping in touch with mom is as easy as a Skype call. Encouraging others to try long-term travel on for size is as easy as sharing a photo and status update on social media. Heck, even making money as you go now requires little more than a laptop. There i...

Amazing Footage: Regional Jet Landed This Morning Without Its Nose Gear, Everyone Safe

Myanmar National Airlines flight UB103 from Yangon to Mandalay arrived on time Sunday morning — but the nose gear on the Embraer ERJ-190 failed to extend. After a go-around and a failed attempt at an alternate gear extension plane entered a holding pattern to burn off fuel and then the crew executed a ‘nose up’ landing, where they keep the plane’s nose up as long as they can “bringing the aircraft to a halt on the runway on both main gear struts and the nose of the aircraft.” Continue reading Am...

Drunk Tokyo bar bitch?

I’ve taken a photograph of this incredibly small bar before. Back then, both the proprietor and the sole customer were passed out. This time, presumably due to space restrictions, it was two sleeping drunks inside, and one relegated to the outside.

The Feast of Being a Mother

Next year my daughter Chelsea will be celebrating Mother's Day differently as her baby will be in her arms. I will be a grandmother, and my mother a great grandmother. The wonder of giving birth, bring life, loving another, helping and watching a baby become their own person, it is an utter miracle, a masterpiece, a workout, a rollercoaster ride of emotion, a full circle of everything, anything and beyond imagination. A child is a gift like no other. I was fortunate to have a mother who loved...

One Year Later – Reflections On My Route 66 Adventure

I don’t normally recognize trip anniversaries, otherwise that’s all I’d be doing. Every now and then though a trip is so remarkable and so impactful that it becomes part of who I am. This is rare but, when it does happen, it is exceptional and driving the entirety of Route 66 was one such adventure. It’s hard to believe that a year has already gone by; it seems just like yesterday when we got up early, left Chicago and nervously started to bump along the Mother Road. What ensued was a fun and e...
