How to Connect with Employers in Canada

by  Jodi Tingling In a recent webinar, we discussed job search strategies with ACCES Employment and Seneca College to explore the approaches job seekers should use to successfully connect with prospective employers. We addressed such issues as penetrating the hidden job market, and establishing relationships with employers by using effective communication strategies. On average, up to 80 percent of jobs are not advertised—these jobs make up the hidden job market. Employers find candidates th...

It was like a river…

Yesterday, at town hall it was like a river. Police kept shipping people away but people kept coming. At some point it was too much for police to ship them away. I was happy to see so many peaceful people on the road marching to asset their right. There is some hope. I didn’t take many pictures. In fact you will find better pictures on twitter or on newspapers. But here are mine anyway. document.createElement('video'); People are being shipped to detention center. ...

Exploring Emilia-Romagna, Italy in 7 Bites

There are many great culinary centers around the world; spots made famous either entirely or in part for their rich food history. My favorite though is without hesitation the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Although not a place many Americans know about, they really should because it’s from the towns, cities and farms spread across the area where some of Italy’s, and the world’s, most famous dishes and ingredients all got their start. The complete list of delicacies that hail from here woul...

Old Haunts

We headed out on this our last Sunday to see some places we used to see often. Two small villages, Ansouis and Cucuron. They seemed very unchanged to me. I used to go to Ansouis for the small Sunday market and Cucuron had a great brochante every summer. The same ancient church and chateau. Same fabulous view from on high. The chapel remains untouched and in need of repair but Mary looks bright and shiny. Joan of Arc under a shabby wall with old paint remaining. ...

Quebec Road Trip: Quebec City to Havre-Saint-Pierre

If you’re looking for a Quebec road trip that’s a little different, why not drive the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River from Quebec City to Havre-Saint -Pierre, the last town of any size, with the option to continue to Kegashka, at the end of Highway 138 – a distance of 1,060 kilometres. In theory you could do the road trip in one long day, taking about 12 hours. But there are a lot of beautiful small towns to explore, some incredible whale watching to do and one of Canada’s most beaut...

Leaked Marriott Memo: The End of Annual 10 Elite Nights For Meetings

Several days ago I flagged the possibility that Marriott would be eliminating the great annual offer of 10 elite nights for booking a meeting at a hotel. Before the Marriott and Starwood programs were combined Marriott used to let you earn 10 elite nights per meeting with no annual cap. Word on the street was that this offer would be going away entirely. And indeed a leaked internal communication from Marriott bears this out. Vacations are good for kids study

Springing for a family vacation might not sound like the cheapest Christmas gift, but research shows that it could actually be what’s best for your kids. Professor Jaak Panksepp, a neuroscientist at Washington State University, discovered that family holidays can enhance brain development in children. Playing and exploring, two activities that are not part of the daily routine of school and work, lead to brain growth that is linked to “cognitive functioning, social intelligence and well-foc...

The origin of classic holiday spices

“The holidays” is not technically a scent, but we all know exactly what the phrase “smells like the holidays” means. Catching a whiff of five key spices — allspice, anise, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg — evokes a warming feeling of comfort during the coldest months in the Northern Hemisphere. A major reason these spices are nearly universally accepted as holiday staples is that many of them appear in the food and drinks we consume this time of year (and candles, but first and foremost food). T...

Finding Solitude Near Salt Lake City

It’s hard to find a more perfect name than Solitude for a getaway resort. I was looking forward to speaking at a recent America Outdoors conference for outfitters, guides, and adventure tour operators, but it seemed a shame to go all the way to the host venue in Salt Lake City, Utah and not experience the world-famous winter resorts in the nearby Wasatch Mountains. Until recently, winter...Read the whole entry... »          Related Stories Hanoi to Halong Bay in Vietnam4 Helpful Travel AppsT...

How to pack a carry-on for Christmas

Some people are totally fine checking bags. They enjoy the cultural anthropology that is airport baggage claim and prefer to breeze through airports with nothing but the shirts on their backs. And for these people, the holidays don’t present much of a challenge other than making sure none of their gifts get broken in transit. But for the carry-on-only crowd, flying this time of year can be especially perplexing. How does one fit a week’s worth of cold-weather clothes into a carry-on already j...

American Airlines Now Allows Passengers To Specify Their Gender As U or X

Earlier this year a new airline standard was rolled out no longer requiring passengers to declare a gender to fly. Several states provide an ‘X’ option on their IDs for gender. United Airlines was first to offer both U(undisclosed) and X(unspecified) as a gender option this spring. Since on or about December 10th American Airlines has adopted this standard.
