A Few Reasons To Love The Saint Hotel in Key West

Over the decades Key West has taken on an almost mythical reputation. An enclave for pirates and anyone looking to escape from the rest of the world, a home for Hemingway, a vacation for Truman – the community has earned its reputation over the years as being a place of not only escape, but refuge and it was with a lot of anticipation that I finally arrived into this strange little town at the edge of the country. What helped set the tone for me was my very quirky but also very luxurious bo...

A hidden church.

This church, so well hidden, dates from 1855 and is in a perfect Neo-Gothic style. Some modern buildings have later separated the entrance from the street. We are just in front of the “Le Bon Marché” department store (see previous post here). The church is called Saint Ignace. It’s a Jesuit church dedicated to Saint Ignace, Ignatius de Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit movement. I already talked about the fact that Ignatius together with some friends decided about the creatio...

Tips for a ski trip with little kids

Going on a family ski vacation sounds like a lovely enough idea: being in the mountains, spending time away together, hanging out by the crackling fire at night. Yet the main point of a ski vacation is to ski, or snowboard, and that’s where things get complicated. Not everyone in your family may ski at the same level, and some of you may not ski at all. Suddenly your family vacation can seem like a logistical nightmare, trying to make sure everyone is having fun. Before you book that ski trip...

Why is it so hard to relax?!

I'm reading "The Secret to a Relaxing Vacation: Meticulous, Detailed Plans" (in NY Magazine), and I happen to know that market research shows — over and over again — that the main thing people say they want from a vacation is relaxation. But there's a huge paradox. Traveled-to vacations are not necessarily relaxing. I see 3 choices here, one of which is something the travel industry (and the press outlets that sell travel advertising) do not want you to think about (except in a very negative way)...

Hyatt Regency San Francisco Offers Free Night Awards Again, Can We Win Over Andaz Maui Too?

The Hyatt Regency San Francisco has been a long-time, repeat scofflaw of Hyatt's loyalty program. They have played games to avoid offering rooms to program members for points. However they are once again making award nights available. Back in 2015 their strategy was to only make standard rooms available as part of ‘packages’ (such as with breakfast or parking included) and thus those rooms were not available for points stays. I pushed and got that fixed, but it's a game of whack-a-mole and the...
