how do you hold a fork and knife? or, in which i discover my table manners are american

As a child, I was taught to use a knife and fork like this: fork in left hand, securing what you want to cut, knife in right hand, cutting. Put knife down, transfer fork from left hand to right hand, put food in mouth. Repeat. My mother drilled this into me and my siblings. My family was not overly big on table manners, but taking that extra moment to put the knife down, and transfer the fork before putting food in your mouth, was considered a critical lesson.I recently overheard two people -- Ca...

Where to Eat in Death Valley

As you can imagine this is a hard post to write. That’s because dead folks don’t eat that much, so the pickins are slim. I probably should have done this post on where to hike in Death Valley. Or where to stargaze in Death Valley. Or where to simply stand and be awed in Death […] The post Where to Eat in Death Valley appeared first on SippitySup.

Banning Emotional Support Animals From Airplanes: Your Comments Requested by the Department of Transportation

“As long as the government allows exceptions that you can drive a truck through to laws requiring documentation, no wonder abuse is beyond rampant. There’s simply no repercussions to violating the law and businesses can’t gather enough information to see that the animal is valid. The whole situation is nuts. Besides holding the animal owner accountable for fraud if the animal is just a pet, holding any vet’s license responsible for incorrectly listing any animal as either a service animal or emo...

Why follow the Camino de Norte

Since the 1990s , the medieval pilgrimage El Camino de Santiago has seen a resurgence in popularity, seeing over 300,000 pilgrims a year. It’s not surprising why this pilgrimage has become so popular. It’s easily accessible with diverse route options, luggage transportation services, and various accommodation types, from hostels to elegant inns. However, over-tourism is becoming a problem on the more popular routes. Over three-quarters of pilgrims hike the French and Portuguese routes, pathway...

Travel: Downtown Miami comes alive for Super Bowl LIV

Born and raised in Miami, Lorrie-Ann Diaz remembers when the downtown was a “wasteland, for many, many years, just empty lots.” “Brickell was like Gotham City — that’s what I called it,” Diaz said of the urban neighborhood of downtown Miami that is now its glittering skyscraper-laden financial center. At a recent Miami Heat game, Diaz, who is the NBA team’s vice president of business communications and social responsibility, shared the transformation of downtown Miami around AmericanAirlines Are...

Remember to Garden Your Reservations After You Book Them

I find it's worth checking a booking right after you make it to make sure everything was done correctly -- are traveler names accurate? Can you assign seats? Does a partner airline see the booking and does it appear ready for travel? If the reservation is for some time in the future, scroll through your reservations at least once a month. Do it again a few days in advance of travel, too. Continue reading Remember to Garden Your Reservations After You Book Them...

Best LGBTQ museums and archives

People in power control the pages of history; people without it usually suffer the consequences. In a recent analysis of commonly used history textbooks in Texas and California, the New York Times found that students in Texas receive information only about hot-button LGBTQ issues from the past 50 years: Stonewall, the AIDS crisis, and the recent fight for marriage equality. In California, students receive additional information concerning queer history like sex assignment surgery in the 1950s...

Dog-friendly hotels around the world

Dogs are part of the family, and as that group dynamic has evolved, it’s only natural that our vacationing style has too. More of us are traveling with pets, and to meet this demand, hotels around the world are not only catering to this market, but they’re also creating a whole new genre of doggy-lux. Embroidered blankets at Le Meurice in Paris, designer leashes and collars at London’s exclusive Rosewood Hotel, and an entire VIP dog floor at Hotel Nikko in San Francisco have raised the bar in...

How United Airlines Elite Status Names Have Evolved

United's top public elite tier is 1K, or 1000 which is short for 100,000. However it no longer takes 100,000 miles to earn this status. In fact United MileagePlus no longer has anything to do with miles at all. You no longer earn redeemable points based on miles flown, and status is no longer earned based on distance either. Instead 1K status is either earned based on number of flights (not 100!) and spending, or on spending alone. It's time to rename 1K status. Continue reading How United Ai...
