Canyon Lake AZ

While in PHX we took a drive up to some of the lakes that provide water for the desert area. Canyon Lake is one of many lakes in the area that provide lots of outdoor activities. We had our grandson with us on this trip.

Impact of virtual drinking trend

Life changed slowly in the beginning of 2020, and then all at once when the realities of COVID-19 set in. Restaurants and bars that were filled in February were shuttered until further notice by mid-March. Thousands of hospitality workers lost their jobs, and small-business owners had to make the tough decision to stay open for takeout, close for now, or close for good — decisions that will shape cities around the world for years to come. It’s impossible to know what’s going to happen next, b...

The Marais

Friends of my granddaughter are staying in a hotel in the Marais so we joined them there and walked around. We went to the beautiful Place des Vosges. This door leads to the garden behind the Hotel de Sully. Inside the door. There is a stained glass window frame there that I like to put people behind for photos. The very nice bar in a luxurious hotel. Grafitti on Rue des Rosiers. Just liked this green on the sidewalk.

Puerto Rico virtual experiences

If a trip to Puerto Rico was on your spring break itinerary, those plans were probably derailed thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. Even though you can’t visit Puerto Rico in person, however, that doesn’t mean you can’t take a virtual trip. It’s no replacement for the real thing, but it might be just enough to tide you over until travel is safe again. Discover Puerto Rico is launching a virtual Puerto Rican cultural experience this weekend, March 27-29, bringing the island’s traditions right ...

Lockdown in Paris: Day 13

It has been a long week, so today’s update will be brief. Unsurprisingly, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe made the official announcement that the confinement will last until April 15th (but, once again, everyone assumes it will be extended through the end of April). Sadly, there are now 1995 Coronavirus deaths in France, including a 16-year-old girl with no prior health issues and a cashier working in a large suburban supermarket just outside Paris. Solidarité in ActionBut it’s not just ...

The lockdown in Tokyo begins, sort of

Much debate has surrounded Japan’s post-Diamond Princess avoidance of the coronavirus pandemic — at least on the scale seen elsewhere, anyway. Has it been due to the general lack of physical contact in public? The pretty much standard habit of mask wearing perhaps? Or, has it always been a mere matter of time before the country succumbed? Despite the possible merits of those cultural traits, the latter now appears to be the case, with Tokyo’s governor requesting a soft lockdown at a press confer...

Looking for a way to support the hospitality industry while consciously uncoupling with the idea of eating in during the COVID-19 crisis? Popular Malaysian restaurant Ho Jiak has created a "survival" menu of eight $10 and two $15 takeaway dishes in a response to the COVID-19 crisis. These can be picked up from their Town Hall or Haymarket locations or delivered if you live in their proximity.

How to reduce family stress at home

Times are tough , as we’re locked into our homes with family, navigating a reality that feels rather surreal. In addition to the anxiety each of us is feeling for the world at large — and many more for their livelihoods — some people are experiencing increased stress at home. We spoke with two experts on mental health, families, and relationships about how we can take care of our kids, our partners, and, importantly, ourselves. Modeling for our kids “The first thing to do as parents is to se...

Best online classes

If you’ve already made three batches of homemade pasta with Nona Nerina, cleaned your house from floor to ceiling, rewatched the 10 seasons of Friends, and gone through a couple of good books, it might be time to switch gears if you want to stay sane and entertained during this time of self-isolation. To keep the boredom at bay for the next few weeks, sink your teeth into a long-term project that will keep you busy, and start with online classes. Whether it is sewing, drawing, dancing, or eve...

Now Is A Good Time For Hospitality For Our Frontline Team Members | By Doug Kennedy

With some hotels closing altogether and nearly all doing massive furloughs and layoffs, these are certainly trying times financially for our frontline hospitality workers, but it is also a very emotionally challenging moment. It warms my heart to hear all the stories of hotel owners and asset managers doing all they can to provide as much pay as possible to help bridge the gap to unemployment and government assistance.

Sports announcer commentating life

In the absence of sporting events, the announcers, who live for the thrill of commenting on live games, are left with the unquenchable urge to call something, so this rugby announcer turned to the most obvious alternative — everyday life. Nick Heath, a rugby announcer from London, is spending his lockdown days providing color commentary for the mundane events of everyday life. Using only his phone, Heath recorded himself doing play-by-plays of a range of everyday activities, from people shopp...
