Raphael’s Loggia of Cupid and Psyche Now in Exquisite, Digital Detail

In addition to the many paintings that Raphael painted during his short life, the artist was also responsible for a roomful of frescoes in a Roman palace that is now known as the Villa Farnesina. From 1517-1518, Raphael and his workshop painted scenes from the fable of Cupid and Psyche on the vaulted ceiling of the vast loggia for Agostino Chigi, a banker from Siena who originally owned this mansion on the left bank of the Tiber. The colorful scenes, filled with flora, fauna, and half-clothed d...

Serological studies I’m ignoring: Chelsea, Dutch, Danish, Iran etc.

These studies don’t meet the most basic tests Chelsea Nearly a third of 200 blood samples taken in Chelsea show exposure to coronavirus IFR 0.71% We did extensive internal validation at MGH of this assay before we used it in the field. We've tested 377 negative controls – only 2 false positives. Neg ctrls included […]

Notes on the German (Heinsberg) serological study – IFR 0.37%

The study: IFR 0.37% FATAL CRITIQUE “the study sampled entire households. That can lead to overestimating infections, because people living together often infect each other” [Source]. To me that’s a serious shortcoming. “Streeck and his colleagues claimed the commercial antibody test they used has “more than 99% specificity,” but a Danish group found the test […]

Notes on the Miami-Dade serological study – IFR upto 0.31%

“Taking the fatality number for 21 days after the median testing date, the IFR is 0.17% to 0.31%. This is likely an overestimation as most people use a 14 day delay.” [Source]   Miami-Dade has tens of thousands of missed coronavirus infections, UM survey finds The study, spurred by Miami-Dade County officials, will be an ongoing […]

Notes on the LA County serological study – IFR

This study, published on 21 April, has a very low IFR. But also very low proportion infected overall – therefore sampling issues remain. I might ignore this study after further examination. BACKGROUND Hundreds of thousands in L.A. County may have been infected with coronavirus, study finds

Notes on the Santa Clara serological study – IFR 0.17%

The study: “The raw prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in our sample was 1.5%.” Given the limitations of such tests at such low levels of prevalence, I’m considering ignoring this study. SAMPLING ISSUES Volunteer surveys are a type of convenience sample. Santa Clara investigators used targeted Facebook ads to recruit participants to visit drive-thru test […]

Notes on the New York serological study – IFR 0.86%

The study: IFR = 0.863% Haven’t had time to review the numerator. If they are not including excess deaths, then the IFR could be higher. BACKGROUND On April 23, Cuomo announced preliminary data from the state’s sero-survey, saying that 13.9% of state residents had tested positive for antibodies. In New York City, it was about 21%. […]

Notes on the Spain serological study – IFR 1.2%

This study suggests a rather high IFR but the sample size is HUGE. It is therefore like to be a valid study. Obviously, more can only be said once the study has been critically analysed. Preliminary results from randomized antibody test in Spain (N=70,000)– About 5% of population infected (10 times official figures)– IFR: 1-1.2%– […]

Notes on Swedish Public Health Authority serological study IFR 0.6%

On 15 May 2020 Lisa Brouwers, head of analysis at the Public Health Authority published this. I’m happy to accept this figure as being reasonably valid. MY NOTES   That's better – more in the range I've been thinking about. Estimates of 0.1% have seemed too low. But that should not change Sweden's strategy – […]

Market day

We went into the center of Sarlat for its Saturday market back in April 2006. The weather was good and the place was packed and bustling. Social distancing wasn't a twinkle in anyone's eye back then. The usual food vendors were there in abundance. I also noticed a preponderance of foie gras and other local duck product vendors, not to mention a good share of arts and crafts and souvenir booths, all geared to the tourist shoppers (like us). Market stands and sidewalk cafés set up cheek-by-jowl ...

The Bird's Nest

While on my daily walk around the rice fields Sacha pointed out a red wing crow's nest in the ditch amongst the reeds. I would not have noticed it as it was well concealed and neatly created. A masterpiece exactly as nature is. We marked the path so we could go back and check to see when the blue eggs had hatched. Yesterday two of them hatched and today the third one did. Newbies to the world. I will check on them daily and keep you posted on the growth.   New life. So refreshingly sweet a...

Penguin on an Iceberg in Antarctica

I saw hundreds of thousands of penguins in Antarctica. I saw thousands of icebergs. I even saw hundreds of penguins on icebergs. But this sole Adelie penguin on an iceberg in Antarctica was the most captivating of all. My jaw dropped. I’d been watching colonies of penguins at Brown Bluff make their way, hop by excruciating hop, up a mountainside to nesting grounds. They were ungainly. They often looked as if they were on the verge of tumbling back down the rocky scree. But maintaining their bala...
