what i'm reading: idiot wind, a memoir by peter kaldheim

One of the many wonderful things about working in a library is having access to such a wide variety of books. This has greatly broadened my choice of reading material. In the past, I kept a list, mostly based on book reviews, and read almost exclusively from my List. Florida and Ontario - Why the divergence in Covid results?

Simple people like simple solutions.  We've had it drilled into our collective little brains that the only measure to fight the novel and mostly benign coronavirus is with social distancing and isolation measures, more broadly referred to as "locking down".  Hence when one jurisdiction has differing results from another the automatic assumption by many is that the results are directly linked to these measures. Florida has opened up businesses like bars and restaurants and has seen a spike in ...

Travel: Mammoth Mountain opens up after the coronavirus shutdown

Finlay Torrance recalls riding his bike along empty pathways in the Village at Mammoth. “It was like a post-apocalyptic zombie movie, where you had music playing from the loudspeakers and you were the only person riding through there,” he said of the weeks when Mammoth Lakes, a popular mountain destination high in the Sierra Nevada mountains, was left a ghost town by the novel coronavirus pandemic. The state of the onion

That would be a great title if I actually had onions (or something like them) growing in the vegetable garden. I don't. What I do have is, mostly, doing well so far. The tomatoes and climbing yellow flat beans are making blossoms now. Tomatoes in front, beans in back. Three of six tiny bell peppers on the right. I didn't have luck with the older bean and snow pea seeds, so I planted some climbing purple beans and a row of dwarf green beans. The all came up and are looking good, and the climber...
