Tokyo Trump Fans Gone Wild

Sexy Japanese fans of American politics have had enough. Y oshi Shimuzu got up to speak in his Trump mask at 2:55 pm, it was the end of a 3 hour rally and people were leaving. Maybe it was the chilly November air. Maybe they had an interracial Tinder date they had to get to. Maybe it was to let people who had been waiting, marching and chanting for three hours a chance to be nearer Trump, spiritually at least. Yoshi's mask was about $30 in a Ueno mask...

The Pandemic Has Broken Shale and Left Oil Markets in OPEC Hands - Bloomberg

The Pandemic Has Broken Shale and Left Oil Markets in OPEC Hands - Bloomberg OPEC’s oil ministers have a few challenges to consider at a crucial summit next week, but for the first time in years the shale boom won’t be at the top of the list.A devastating global pandemic and a reckoning with Wall Street appear to have broken the resolve of the shale wildcatters who turned the U.S. into the world’s biggest oil producer. How Ryan Reynolds and Mint Mobile worked without becoming the joke

In the past decade, celebrity interest and investment in tech companies has significantly increased. But not all celebrity investments are created equally. Some investors, like Ashton Kutcher, have prioritized the VC pursuits. Some have invested casually without getting overly involved. Others have used their considerable platforms to market their portfolio to varying degrees of success. It’s been a little over a year since Ryan Reynolds bought a majority stake in Mint Mobile, a deal that has...

Original Content podcast: Just don’t watch Netflix’s ‘Holidate’ with your parents

You might think that a new Netflix film called “Holidate” offers holiday-themed romance that’s perfect for a family watch party. You’d be wrong. The film stars Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey as a pair of strangers who agree (in classic romantic comedy style) to keep each other company on holidays. And while the movie can’t be completely pigeonholed as a raunchy comedy — it also includes a dash of metatextual commentary, with a healthy dose of undiluted romantic schmaltz — “Holidate” is certainl...

Universal domain name acceptance: Notes from the Internet Governance Forum

“It’s crazy. It’s a problem. It’s a known problem and we need to advocate everybody to solve it,” Ajay Data said of the fact that less than 10% of email servers support addresses in local languages. Data is the chair of the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG), a multistakeholder body that advocates for domain names to be parsed by computer systems regardless of language, length, and the top-level domain (better known as TLDs, like .com or .in) that they use. Internationalised Domain Names...

Politicians from Tamil Nadu have called for a ban of online lending apps in the wake of reports that employees of these apps are harassing customers on loan repayments. Have a ball

These two fountains, les fontaines de Pol Bury, were installed in the Cour d'Orléans of the Palais Royal in the center of Paris back in 1985. They didn't exist when I lived in Paris a few years earlier. The first time I was back in Paris was 1988, and there they were. The building itself was also renovated and its façade cleaned since then. Pol Bury was a Belgian artist. He died in 2005. Back then I was just getting started with SLR photography and was into taking color slides. This image is s...

Guest Post: Penni also as S'Mee

Hello Friends!   I’d like to thank Corey for reaching out to us all and inviting us to share a bit about our lives.  I’m Penni, and I found Corey about a year after she began her blog, ‘Tongue in Cheek’. I will rewrite a message I sent her a bit ago, changing the pronouns   "I’m not really into antiques, France is fine- but I’ve never been there, and probably never will— I stumbled on Corey’s blog about a year after she started and I stay because of her literal Spirit. She’s genuine. She’s re...

#Dubai raises a glass to social changes in the Gulf | Financial Times

Dubai raises a glass to social changes in the Gulf | Financial Times When Patrick went to a media launch for a new smartphone in Dubai, the Gulf’s tourism and commercial hub, the expatriate never imagined that the evening would end in a police station.  After an enthusiastic embrace of the free bar that so often graces such marketing events, a verbal altercation with a taxi driver led to his arrest.  His contrite response to police questioning over his non-existent liquor licence — th...

Why stifado is ‘the best food in Greece’ – plus the recipe

This rabbit stew is a big fat Greek classic with many variations, none more memorable than on a summer evening on an Ionian islandThe best meal I ever had in Greece wasn’t mine. It was my friend Nic’s; I tried a mouthful and abandoned my plate for his kouneli stifado – rabbit stew, an unfussy Greek classic that was probably a gift from the Venetians. We tend to think of dill, oregano and thyme as Greek flavours, but this dish, and others, use exotic spices – cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cloves.I ...
