Books Read in 2020

At the start of 2019 I gave myself a goal to read more books (in an effort to rekindle my inner bookworm), and this past year saw a continued growth in the number of books I read, which makes me very happy. Following the 11 I read in 2019, I got through 16 this past year, which falls just short of the goal of 18 I had given myself, which is close enough for me. I did hit some dead spots throughout the year where I didn’t read any, and a few (like Ametora, Pure Invention, and Killing the Bus...

Favorite Media of 2020

For the 11th consecutive time (previously: 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019), here’s my massive look-back at all my favorite things that I consumed over the past year. As always, this is limited to things that were released in 2020, and it’s of course HIGHLY subjective — this is not a round-up of the best media of 2020, but rather a look back at stuff I really enjoyed this past year, because I like the exercise of doing it. And that of course means there’s plen...

A Higher Purpose in Hospitality: 3 Rules of Conscious Leadership | By Arturo Cuenllas

The following is a confession that I make out loud in my classes and seminars: "In my professional career of more than 20 years leading teams in different countries, I have been a bad boss at first, then I improved, but I stayed at levels of mediocrity for a long time. And only in my final stage as a manager could I define myself as a good boss. In any case, I'm not sure I was an exceptional boss. Probably not."

How will travel to the EU change for Britons after Brexit?

The impact of Brexit on European travel after 31 December 2020 is going to be a complicated one. A recent survey by Discover Ferries, which represents ferry operators in the UK and Ireland, reports that only one in three people felt confident about travel changes after the end of the transition period. Only 6% of respondents were aware of all the changes affecting EU travel in 2021.

Why Hotel Brands Are Joining the In-Housing Trend in 2021

Much like the rest of the travel industry, hotel executives are well aware that a new calendar year won't magically bring about a complete rebound from the hardships of the pandemic. To survive until that recovery arrives, they've gotten creative with their offerings, pitching drive-to destinations, day passes for work spaces, and even selling their own branded pillows and robes to travelers dreaming of their next vacation.

Deceptive Digital Marketing Practices Hotels Should Watch Out For | By Nate Lane

Not every company out there has your best interests at heart, but it isn't always easy to tell if - or when - you've been deceived. Without asking the right questions, hoteliers could be misled into comparing apples to oranges when requesting results from technology partners, leading them to make rash decisions based on inaccurate information. No one wants to fall for misleading messages, so here are three of the most common ways hotels can be duped by dishonest collaborators.

The sea food diet

I see food, I eat it. Badum-bum. Here are several photos of our New Year's Eve lunch. We tried to have mussels, but were disappointed not to find any in the markets. For some reason, the season ended earlier than usual. Our disappointment, however, was short lived. Shrimp, heads and shells intact, pre-cooked, ready to peel and eat. I found these nice shrimp at the supermarket and the price was right, so I got 500 grams (just over a pound) for our appetizer. We ate them with a sriracha mayonnai...

After our 112-mile hike in the Sierra Nevada, I won’t underestimate my kids again

Looking for a big adventure? A challenging Californian trek taught me and my boys the value of patience, trust and bottomless snacksWe were less than three minutes into our backpacking trip when the first tantrum erupted. Herbie, our eight-year-old, moaned that his pack was too heavy and threw it on to the floor of the car park. Only 112 miles to go, I thought. We might be embarking on a nightmare. We knew our two-week hike through the Sierra Nevada was ambitious, but we’d been working towards it...
