what i'm reading: the bridge by bill konigsberg -- important, powerful, essential teen fiction

The Bridge, by Bill Konigsberg, is the best YA novel I've read since Eleanor & Park in 2012. Unfortunately, I know that many readers won't go near this book, because of its subject matter: teen suicide. This would be a terrible missed opportunity. It's a great book that both teens and adults -- especially adults who have contact with teenagers -- should read. Yes, it's sad, but it's also hopeful, and it's powerful, and it's necessary.Konigsberg, author of several excellent YA books, approaches t...

Sights and sounds from a dystopian Japanese drinking alley

With trains regularly rattling by behind us, and lots of people walking past, this ramshackle old alleyway was definitely an unusual place to drink. In fact, its unique characteristics made it feel like the absolutely best place to drink — no two ways about it. A spot so special that the photos really don’t do it justice, so I’ve also included a bit of audio to try and better recreate the atmosphere. document.createElement('audio');

Old Times

I was in a part of Paris, the Marais, in an area I haven’t been in for years. It really is interesting. Some unusual street art. I love me a red door. The other crepe place. A more famous one is just down the street. Flowers in the sun. Aren’t they pretty? Very large art work on the side of a building. Lots of art and graffiti in the area. Thank you for your support. Some construction going on.

Tired of these yet? This is the interior of the abbatiale (abbey church) at Fontevraud. Construction of the church began in the twelfth century. It's built mostly in the romanesque architectural style. The nave of the abbey church at Fontevraud, September 2003. The people are gathered around the tomb of Eleanor and Henry. Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael

I was probably just in the right mood for this, because I don’t think it’s an especially good film, but I found myself really enjoying it. Just a sorta feel-good teen drama of the era, and hey, it stars Winona Ryder, which is a-ok with me. Going in I didn’t really remember anything about it, but it slowly started coming back to me as I was watching it. Just a nice little movie to watch on a Saturday night.
