what i'm reading: janis, her life and music

As a teenager and in my early 20s, I was somewhat obsessed with Janis Joplin. I read all the available biographies of her, and took any opportunity to see footage of her legendary performances. I never lost my fascination; I've continued to love Janis' music throughout my life. Reading Janis: Her Life and Music by Holly George-Warren deepened my appreciation of Janis' intelligence and artistry. The book also shifted my adult view of Janis, from a misunderstood, tragic figure, to a joyful, life...

Stripes

This was one of my favorite movies — or at least comedies — when I was a kid, and it’s funny to watch it now and see that it has a pretty decent amount of nudity. It’s still pretty fun, with a great cast, and yeah, some things haven’t aged particularly well (that ol’ 80s sexism that constantly pops up as I re-watch these movies), but I still got a nostalgic kick out of most of it, and it was fun to see how a lot of the scenes ended up feeling so familiar, even though I’m sure I haven’t wat...

Tokyo lanterns and old style looks

Lanterns are always photogenic, and a confidently worn trilby is possibly even more appealing, so to get both in the same frame was pleasing to say the least.

Le Marche, The Marches

I was recording a conversation with Wendy for the Flavor of Italy podcast. It started out like a normal conversation. “So, do you know where the name of the Italian region Le Marche comes from?” Wendy asked. I hesitated. Sweat poured off my ample forehead. “Um, well, no..” “The Marches.” Wendy said. I hesitated. I was good at hesitating. I should write an instruction manual. “So, what does ‘the Marches’ mean in English?” I blurted. There was a long silence, a plethora of hesitancy. This i...

Sun

The sun is out for a few days which makes Paris especially nice to explore, despite what people say about the romance of Paris in the rain. Nice shadows. Elegant. I liked the shapes of this church against the sky. The metro entrance made of hand blown Murano glass looks pretty too. I think this must be Marie Antoinette.

Sunday stained glass

I believe this window is in the logis royal (royal residence) at Loches. It's a symbol of the royalty, replete with a crown and the fleur de lys (lily flower), a favorite symbol of the French monarchy. There are also the letter C and the Roman numeral VII, standing for King Charles VII, who frequented the logis in the fifteenth century. Original or reproduction? I don't know. Logis royal, Loches, May 2006. I read in Wikipedia that Charles VII was the first French king to reside in the Loire Va...

Raiders of the Lost Ark

I figured I’d be taking a longer break after finishing my 1990 movie marathon, but I’ve been itching to get going on 1981, and this Saturday morning, Raiders of the Lost Ark felt like a perfect way to start it. I think I can say that this is probably my favorite film of all time, or at least my favorite action/adventure film. Every single time I watch it I still enjoy it immensely, and I can barely find any faults in it. I also just love this setting so damn much, and that’s why I’m pretty...

For Your Eyes Only

When I do these movie marathons I usually don’t include the Bond film from that year, since I re-watch them so often, but it had been a while since I had watched For Your Eyes Only, so as I kicked off my 1981 movie marathon, I was in the mood to watch it. I’ve usually considered this to be one of the better Moore films, and I think I still feel that way. The soundtrack is godawful though, which really ruins a lot of the scenes, and the villain is pretty boring. It’s interesting how many pa...

Friday the 13th Part 2

As I was reminded during the opening recap of this movie (and strangely enough, it’s quite extensive, at like 5-10 minutes), the ending of the first film — that sees Jason jumping out of the water to attack the girl in the boat — is a fantastic sequence, and although most of this film is a bore, I really did get a kick out of the similarly presented climax shot. The fact that I wasn’t expecting it made it that much better (and surprising). I’d say that the last half hour or so of this is d...
