It is a tree blossom.                    [Author: French la Vie]

Peeking at peonies

This is one of two pivoine (peony) clumps in our garden. We didn't plant them; they were here when we bought the house. However, I did transplant this clump by digging up and dividing the original clump. "Clump" is the appropriate botanical term, I'm certain. I wasn't blogging back then, but I mentioned having divided the plants in a 2009 post. Blogging is a great repository of memory. A peony flower bud. It will open soon. We're still having chilly mornings that hover around freezing. We can ...

Sights and sounds from Japan’s most dystopian train station

Earlier this year I added an audio track to some photos of a wonderfully atmospheric old drinking alleyway. It was an experiment that definitely gave the images something extra, so having made a few recordings in Niigata’s unique Tsutsuishi station several years ago, I decided to re-edit the photos I’d taken, narrow down the selection and post them below with sounds that are arguably as distinctive as the station itself. First built in 1912, it was originally above ground, but that all changed...

Foran Grade and Windy Point Hike

The Foran Grade and Windy Point hike is a great choice for anyone who lives in the Calgary area and is eager for a hike that delivers great mountain views starting early in the season. I wouldn’t do this hike in the summer when there are more interesting choices, but I’d come back again in the fall to catch the vibrant colours. The effort to reward ratio on this hike is high. The Foran Grade trail hooks up with many other trails at well-signed intersections, so there are many days worth of hik...

Cobblestones On The Rue Prevot

Just a few doors from my apartment is a narrow pedestrian street, that’s more like a passageway. A few weeks ago, while it was raining, I walked through rue Prevot, and as I looked down, the wet surface of the cobblestones were glistening. It created an interesting and intriguing texture and heightened color of them. I started taking photos and I liked the way they looked, so I am sharing them with you.   Please let me know if you like them.   I want to thank everyone for watching m...
