Porky’s

Even before I started watching this I was fully expecting it to be problematic, and oh boy, it sure was. I mean, yes, it’s a product of its time, and rampant sexism and misogyny is pretty much par for the course when it comes to that era’s comedies — especially anything that revolves around teens or college students. At first I was even taken aback by some raw examples of anti-Semitism, although that turns out to be a plot point that becomes surprisingly progressive. Did I laugh? A bit, an...

Culture needs us, as much as we need culture

Last month, a horn player sounded an 18,000 year-old conch shell, discovered in 1931 at Marsoulas Cave in France. In doing so, he confirmed that the shell was not only decorative, but the oldest wind instrument of its kind. In January this year, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the world’s oldest cave painting was revealed, dating back 45,000 years. These discoveries remind us how culture is vital to human lives. It is a deep-rooted anthropological need, with its origins in the distant past...

Bloomin' tree

Here's a close-up of the flowers on our ornamental prunus. I don't know if it's a plum, a cherry, or something else. Prunus is a broad category. The main thing is that it doesn't produce any fruit. It's just for show. We're getting loads of pretty blossoms this year. We did have a couple of fruiting plum trees in the yard when we moved in. The fruit was good, but it wasn't all that abundant. Both trees were knocked over by wind during the storm Xynthia in 2010. It's hard to believe that it's b...
