Marie-Antoinette Clothing

On auction today there was this... a textile fragment which was a piece of Marie-Antoinette's clothing. Seriously why does this sort of thing grab my attention? The trip it takes me on...   First thought: OMG I want it. Second thought: Yeah at 1200 Euros beginning bid I do not think that is going to be a realistic option. Third thought: Dang to think most likely someone is going to bid 5000 euros and take it home. Fourth thought: 5000 euros can feed a lot of people or at least this should g...

A look at the midnight ride of Paul Revere on April 18-19

Poetic license Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” (see below) is based on historic events, but it is more of a tale and not a historical account. Longfellow wrote the poem after taking a tour of Boston in 1860. He was a pacifist and abolitionist who wrote the poem to try and unify a divided nation on course for the Civil War. Historians have dissected the poem since 1860 and compared it to Revere’s account of the ride in his own words and other historic evidence. The National...

Notre Dame

It will be the second year anniversary (April 15) of the tragic fire at Notre Dame. I thought I’d walk by and have a look. There were a lot of cherry trees in bloom. There aren’t as many this year. I’m surprised these made it. From across the street. In the other direction. Always happy to see pink bloosoms. The famous bookstore, Shakespear and Co, is open during the confinement.

What the rise of digital nomads can tell us about the next wave of remote working

If one thing is clear about remote work, it's this: Many people prefer it and don't want their bosses to take it away. When the pandemic forced office employees into lockdown and cut them off from spending in-person time with their colleagues, they almost immediately realized that they favor remote work over their traditional office routines and norms. As remote workers of all ages contemplate their futures – and as some offices and schools start to reopen – many Americans are asking hard questi...

Are Your Guests “Apped Out?” Only Welcoming Words Such As These, Spoken By Humans, Convey Authentic Hospitality | By Doug Kennedy

As a writer in the hospitality space, I am often approached by new companies with emerging technology who are looking for PR. Recently I was approached by yet another company about an exciting new innovation they had invented there and were l...

Winter's leftovers

As spring progresses, albeit slowly this year, there are still some reminders of winter out there. These are carotte sauvage (wild carrot or Queen Anne's lace) flowers, dead but still standing. Skeletons of last summer's delicate white flowers. Saturday was an overall cold day. We started out warmer than it has been at just under 7ºC (about 45ºF), but even with sun out, the day didn't get much above 12ºC (about 54ºF). When I walked Tasha in the late afternoon, a cold north wind chilled us to t...
